REACH providing analysis and technical support after Cyclone Mahasen/Bangladesh

Cyclone Mahasen made landfall on May 16, 2013 in the Barisol division of southern Bangladesh. The Government of Bangladesh initiated the evacuation of more than 1 million people living in the storm’s path to storm shelters. After landfall, the cyclone quickly weakened and was downgraded to a tropical storm before dissipating over northern Bangladesh .

The Government of Bangladesh reported 17 casualties as a result of the cyclone with 463,303 people affected. The Government also reported 23,539 totally destroyed and 109,687 partially damaged shelters .

Picking up the pieces after Cyclone Mahasen in Bangladesh

On 16 May, 2013, Cyclone Mahasen struck coastal Bangladesh, killing 17 people and affecting around 1.5 million people across the districts of Patuakhali, Barguna and Bhola.

Mofiza Begum was at home with her two sons when the cyclone struck in the early hours of the morning. Suddenly one side of her house fell apart and the entire building became unsteady. Fearing the tin roof and walls might collapse in on her family, she ran to a neighbor’s house, which was still standing.

Appeal target:
CHF 2,789,432 in cash, kind, or services to support the Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS) to assist 9,000 families (45,000 beneficiaries) for nine months and will be completed by end of February 2014.

Appeal Coverage: The appeal is 11 per cent covered. Funds are required to enable BDRCS in continuing to provide humanitarian assistance and recovery.

Pounds of Prevention: A Disaster Risk Reduction Story - Focus: Bangladesh

Bangladesh has a long history with destructive cyclones. In 1970, a powerful cyclone killed nearly 300,000 people, and the Great Cyclone of 1991 killed 139,000 people. Shortly thereafter, however, the Government of Bangladesh and its citizens, with support from USAID, began to make enormous strides towards reducing the risk cyclones pose to lives and livelihoods.

Small-scale farmers could end global hunger

As world leaders prepare for the Hunger Summit in London on 8 June, international aid organisation CARE Australia is urging governments around the world to put female small-scale farmers in developing countries at the centre of efforts to end hunger.

Focusing on women is vital because women account for 60 to 80 per cent of food production in developing countries, and yet only five per cent of government agricultural services, such as training in agriculture techniques and livestock vaccination programs, ever reach women farmers.
