World Bank to Finance 19 Centers of Excellence to Help Transform Science, Technology, and Higher Education in Africa

WASHINGTON, April 15, 2014 – The World Bank’s Board of Executive Directors has approved US$150 million to finance 19 university-based Centers of Excellence in seven countries in West and Central Africa. These competitively selected centers will receive funding for advanced specialized studies in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)-related disciplines, as well as in agriculture and health.

WFP is concerned that a lack of funds could compromise efforts to support households in the Sahel, where many are still recovering from the crisis in 2012.

DAKAR- Two years ago, when the Sahel endured one of the most serious food crises in its history, we all stepped up. Humanitarian organizations provided vital support to populations in crisis, thanks to the extraordinary mobilization of governments, partners on the ground, and the international community, who listened and responded quickly to our appeal.

At week 13 of the 2014 epidemic season, two LGAs in Nigeria have crossed the epidemic threshold, and in the other counties, six districts have surpassed the alert threshold:

• Burkina Faso: Nanoro remains in alert with an AR of 7.6;

• Cameroon: Mbengwi has crossed the alert threshold with an AR of 7.1 • Gambia: Jarra West crossed the alert threshold with an AR of 7.0 • Ghana: Yendi and Wa have crossed the alert threshold with the following AR: 5.7 and 5.2.

UNDP steps up its support for sound public finance in Africa

Dakar, Senegal – The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will train a diverse range of partners during the second phase of a comprehensive programme designed to mobilize tax revenues and improve budget management in Africa.

The programme currently supports 17 countries in West and Central Africa and it will expand its portfolio to include a large number of civil society representatives, parliamentarians, universities and government departments involved in service delivery. Part of this effort will be conducted through online training.
