Summary of WFP assistance: Togo is ranked 165th out of 187 countries on the 2014 UNDP Human Development Report (HDR). The rank for Togo has not improved in recent years, dropping from152 to 159 between 2007 and 2013. The population is estimated to 6,191,155 according to the 2010 census. The gross domestic product (GDP) per capita is USD 914 (HDR 2013). After thirteen years of economic decline due to political crisis and donor disengagement, the economic status of Togo has improved since 2006.

  • The regional analysis of the Cadre harmonisé in March showed that 4,749,000 persons will be in a situation of food security crisis and emergency in the region from March to May 2015.

  • From June 2015, the nutritional situation in the Sahel may become worrying, as global acute malnutrition rates are expected to exceed the alert threshold (10 percent) in several areas, and may reach the emergency threshold (15 percent) in some places.

Comme mesure préventive contre la propagation de l'épidémie de grippe aviaire, plus de 160 000 oeufs ont été saisis et détruits à Manga, dans la région du Centre-Sud. La majorité des cas de grippe aviaire avait été signalée dans cette zone en Février et Mars.

Key messages

  • Nigeria has successfully weathered the stress test of presidential elections. This peaceful transition has reinforced the democratisation process occurring throughout West Africa. Other crucial elections are planned in the region in the coming months.

  • Both the Ebola crisis and falling oil prices were a shock to the region. West Africa recorded 6% growth in 2014 and will continue the trend this year. The diversification of the economy, in agriculture and in services, will protect against external shocks.

  • In Q1-2015, FAO’s global cereal price index fell a further 13 percent year-on-year. It is now 5 percent lower than in Q4-2014.

  • Real prices of wheat have fallen by 10 percent over the last quarter. Prices are 20 percent lower than in Q1-2014 and at their lowest levels since mid-2010, thanks to large supplies, favourable production forecasts and strong export competition.
