Timor-Leste: IDPs face difficult journey home

Report
IRIN
DILI, 1 December 2008 (IRIN) - More than 100,000 people fled their homes in 2006 for welfare centres and relatives' homes when violence erupted following splits within the police and military.

Forty-one camps have now closed and the government hopes to close the last 16 by February 2009 and help the remaining displaced people (IDPs) - about 2,200 families (15,000 people) - to return home. However, the government is struggling to provide essential services such as water and education to communities where large numbers of IDPs have returned.

Unresolved land ownership issues are

Asia Pacific food situation update - Nov 2008

Global financial crisis could affect food security

Although major cereal prices continued declining after surging to record highs earlier this year and the region looks forward to increased 2008 harvests, Asia-Pacific food security is likely to be negatively affected by the international financial meltdown. The economic slowdown in the OECD nations is affecting Asia's labour-intensive export industry leading to large-scale employee retrenchment, reducing the incomes of urban workers and their ability to buy food. Services struggle as ETimor empties refugee camps

East Timor's government says closing the country's internal refugee camps represents only a small part of the effort needed to ensure a full recovery from the civil conflict of two years ago.

More than 100,000 people fled their homes and settled in camps across East Timor when violence erupted in 2006.

As Radio Australia's Stephanie March reports from the capital, Dili, officials and aid agencies have been discussing the challenges posed by the large numbers of refugees now returning home.

Timor-Leste: Lack of government participation stymies Timor stability

Jesse Wright, dpa

Dili_(dpa) _ Two years after the police and military collapsed and months of anarchy drove more than 100,000 people into displacement camps, East Timor has yet to fix the underlying causes of the instability, and, given the poor government turnout at a stability retreat Friday, it would seem there is still little political will to address the issues.

Only a handful of government officials bothered attending the government-sponsored retreat that was designed to look for long-term solutions to the problems threatening the stability of Asia's newest nation.
