The Kurdish Regional Government in Northern Iraq has appealed to IOM and other international agencies for more help to cope with growing numbers of refugees arriving from Syria.

According to Shakir Yasseen Yasseen, Director General of the Regional Government's Bureau of Migration and Development (BMD), the number of Syrian refugees sheltering in Kurdistan's Domiz refugee camp near Dahuk has increased to over 3,500 in the past month.

Cold spell in Europe and Asia in late winter 2011/2012

After unusually mild weather in December 2011 and early January 2012 almost all over Europe, the weather situation changed abruptly in the second half of January. An incursion of cold polar air, coming from northern Russia at the south flank of an extensive high pressure area brought a sudden cooling to almost the whole Eurasian continent). During that cold spell, also some considerable snowfall occurred over various parts of the continent. In the first half of February, the cold wave started weakening first in Asia and in mid-February also in Europe.

Hungary orders Danube closed because of big freeze

BUDAPEST, February 10, 2012 (AFP) - Hungary closed the Danube to river traffic Friday due to thick ice, bringing shipping to a near standstill on Europe's busiest waterway, as the continent's cold snap death toll passed 540.

"Shipping was ordered stopped overnight Thursday to Friday because of conditions created by icing along the Hungarian part of the river," Istvan Lang, who heads the national technical supervisory body OMIT said.

"All ships still underway must immediately head for the closest harbour," Lang, quoted by MTI news agency, said.

Flooding forces evacuations in Slovakia

BRATISLAVA, June 5 (Reuters) - Heavy rains forced the evacuation of 1,500 people in Slovakia's second largest city of Kosice overnight amid fears the swollen river Hornad would overflow and flood surrounding areas.

PRAGUE, June 2 (Reuters) - Heavy rains triggered new floods in central Europe on Wednesday, killing at least two people in the Czech Republic and forcing thousands from their homes in Slovakia and Hungary.

Flooding around the region in the past month has caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damages and killed 18 in Poland. Meteorologists expect rains to keep up until the weekend in parts of central Europe.

Czechs, Poles, Slovaks to cooperate during current floods

Prague - The Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia will cooperate in the rescue operations and the removal of damage during the current floods, the prime ministers of the three countries agreed.

Czech Prime Minister Jan Fischer who is now on visit to Armenia consulted the flood situation with his Slovak and Polish counterparts, Robert Fico and Donald Tusk, Fischer=B4s spokesman Roman Prorok told CTK.
