New Italian initiatives to help the refugees

The Italian Ambassador to Jordan, Patrizio Fondi, has visited the Syrian refugee camp in Zaatari to deliver medical supplies for the Italian-Jordanian field hospital. The supplies will be used to treat respiratory illnesses, diabetes, high blood pressure, reproductive health and children’s conditions, as requested by the hospital’s director.

Italy sends new humanitarian aid - helping the refugees is our priority, says Terzi

Acting on Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi’s instructions, Italian Development Cooperation has sent a new consignment of humanitarian aid for Syrian refugees to the Syrian-Turkish border.

“The humanitarian emergency caused by the conflict”, underscored Terzi, “continues to be extremely serious and the conditions of the Syrian people, who are paying an unacceptable price, are the constant focus of our very concrete efforts”. Italy is the second European donor for 2013, with 22 million euros earmarked in addition to the 7.5 million allocated thus far.

Italian Development Cooperation sends food and medical supplies for the population of Turkana

Italian Development Cooperation has donated food and medical supplies to the population of the Lake Turkana region in north-western Kenya, where communities are suffering extreme conditions and serious shortages of basic supplies.

The Italian donation, of 150,000 euros, was used to buy 74 tons of corn, 47 tons of beans and 22,000 litres of cooking oil. The medical supplies donated include antibiotics, an incubator and equipment for maternity and paediatric services.

Tents and generators from Italy for the refugees

11 December 2012

New help from Italy for the Syrian refugees. A emergency humanitarian flight has airlifted 8 generators, 100 multi-purpose tents with heat-cold insulation for the winter, and 2000 blankets to Amman. The supplies, for Syrian refugees currently in refugee camps in Jordan, were delivered to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), which will distribute them over the next few days.

IOM Introduces Psycho-Social Course in Libyan University to Aid War Victims

A group of 35 Libyan health, educational and social experts have become the first intake of a six-month IOM psycho-social course offered at the University of Tripoli.

Participants on the Italian-funded diploma course: "Psychological Intervention in War-Torn Societies" will be taught to devise emergency psychological programmes to tackle the long term emotional and social effects of the Libyan crisis.

The United States Commitment to the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves - Year Two Progress Report

In honor of the Global Alliance for Clean Cookstoves’ second anniversary, the United States is pleased to announce that total investment in support of the Alliance and clean cookstoves has reached up to $114 million. This investment represents a nearly $10 million increase over the past year and will help the Alliance achieve its goal of enabling 100 million homes to adopt clean and efficient stoves and fuels by 2020.

IOM Relocates Refugees, Fights Disease at South Sudan's Flood-Affected Doro Camp

IOM is helping to relocate refugees from Doro Camp in South Sudan's Upper Nile Sate, following floods which hit the area early this week causing a temporary suspension of aid deliveries.

The Organization is also intensifying hygiene promotion and the construction of emergency latrines following an outbreak of Hepatitis E in several refugee camps in Upper Nile State, South Sudan.

Syria: field camp donated by Italy up and working in Jordan

The field hospital donated by Italy to Jordan to come to the aid of Syrian refugees is now fully functional. Assembly of the facility at Zaatari was completed on Saturday September 1st, thanks to the intervention of Minister Terzi and his Jordanian counterpart Judeh, along with the constant pressure of the Italian Embassy in Amman.

Ebola emergency in Congo, Cooperation donates 300,000 euro

The international community launched an appeal for aid for the Ebola emergency in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and the Italian Cooperation responded with a multilateral donation of €300,000 to finance the WHO project aimed at combatting the epidemic registered in late July in the country’s eastern province.

Since early 2012, more than 1,000 migrants have arrived on the tiny Italian island of Lampedusa, Sicily by boat from Libya. Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is monitoring the humanitarian and medical situation and providing screening and treatment for tuberculosis and Chagas disease, two neglected diseases to which migrants are particularly vulnerable. In this interview, Dr. Silvia Garelli, MSF head of mission in Italy, discusses MSF’s activities there and the health challenges migrants face.

Pneumococcal vaccine launched in Zimbabwe

HARARE, Zimbabwe, 31 July 2012 – At Kuwadzana Polyclinic, in a surburb of Harare, 3-month-old Joe Mahachi was the first child to receive the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV 13), which protects children against pneumonia, the world’s leading killer of children under age 5.

The vaccine will also protect children from meningitis, sepsis, and in some cases, deafness.

Italy dispatches field hospital to help Syrian refugees in Jordan

Date : 7/3/2012 ROME, July 3 (KUNA) -- An Italian field hospital that will provide medical assistance to 25,000 Syrian refugees in Jordan has been dispatched on Tuesday upon orders by the Italian government in Rome.

"We are close to them (Syrian refugees) by supporting the action of the international community which is looking for a solution to the crisis and by providing help to a population struck by a humanitarian tragedy which is increasingly unbearable," Italian foreign minister Giulio Terzi said in a press statement.

Syria – humanitarian emergency. Aid from Italy - Senate gives go-ahead for participation in UN Mission

Italy is stepping up its political, diplomatic and humanitarian commitment to help find a solution to the Syrian crisis. The Senate has approved the decree – with 260 votes in favour and one abstention – on our country’s participation in the UN Observers’ mission. The provision now passes to the Chamber. The financial cover, of around 800,000 euros, will be obtained from the 2012 funding for the mission in Lebanon.

Launch of a new Italian Development Cooperation Post-emergency Program

The Italian Cooperation is launching a new 1.3 million euro post-emergency program in the South and the South-East of Ethiopia, focusing on areas affected by recurrent adverse climatic events and, in some cases, subject to refugee flows from neighboring countries.

The five areas identified within three Regional States, Oromia, SNNPR and Somali, are characterized by a chronic shortage of potable water and adequate sanitation facilities. Such condition is often exacerbated by drought events which are particularly intense in the dry-lands of the Horn of Africa.

Second quake causes destruction in northern Italy

Following a second major earthquake in northern Italy, the Italian Red Cross, in close cooperation with civil protection authorities, has been hard at work undertaking relief and assistance work. Over 200 staff and volunteers swung into action following the magnitude 5.8 quake which struck this morning in Emilia Romagna.

As the operation continues, more people and transport from the Settimo Torinese and Verona emergency intervention centres are arriving and will work under the direction of local authorities.

Italian Red Cross volunteers respond to deadly earthquake

A magnitude-5.9 earthquake struck north-eastern Italy early in the morning of Sunday 20 May, killing at least seven people, injuring 50 and toppling several buildings. The quake struck at 4:04 am between Modena and Mantua, about 35 kilometres north-northwest of Bologna at a relatively shallow depth of five kilometres. The epicentre was between the towns of Finale Emilia, San Felice sul Panaro and Sermide, but was felt as far away as Tuscany and northern Alto Adige.
