Romania Floods OCHA - Situation Report No. 1

1. The Director General of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has addressed an official request for assistance to the United Nations following the severe floods which affected the country in June 1998.

2. From 8-22 June nearly two-thirds of Romania's 41 districts were hit with torrential rain causing widespread flooding and landslides. Official reports indicate that, as of 22 June, 21 persons died, 1,000 people had to be evacuated, 1,886 houses were destroyed, 11,133 household annexes damaged. Over 103,000 hectares

Turkey - Earthquake OCHA Situation Report No. 2

General Situation

1. Following the earthquake which struck southern Turkey on 27 June, today the Government reported to the UN Resident Coordinator's Office in Ankara that number of deaths is 117 and that of the wounded is 1,517. The latter figure includes 760 cases of minor injuries, which did not require hospitalization. Some 30 persons are still missing. The earthquake was also felt in Cyprus, Syria and Israel, although casualties and damage were confined to Turkey.

Afghanistan - Earthquake OCHA Situation Report No. 12


OCHA/GVA - 98/0232
1. For the last week the relief operation has been in full force with 12 helicopters and several fixed wing aircraft flying relief items from Pakistan and Tajikistan to the earthquake affected area in northern Afghanistan. Helicopters, trucks and donkey convoys are delivering relief supplies to individual villages.

Turkey - Earthquake OCHA Situation Report No. 1

UNDP/OCHA Resident Representative in Ankara reports the following:

General Situation:

A 20-second earthquake of magnitude 6.3 on the Richter scale shook the city of Adana and environs in Southern Turkey at 4:56pm, Saturday, 27 June 1998. Shock-waves were felt as far away as Cyprus and Syria . Second to Adana itself, settlements affected the most were Ceyhan, a subprovince of Adana, and neighbouring province of Mersin.

Angola Humanitarian Situation Report - 3 - 12 June 1998

During the reporting period, the security situation has deteriorated significantly as has been recognised by the President of Angola who told the press that the "political-military situation is serious." The President promised to take measures (it should be understood as political and military measures) if by the end of June the Lusaka Protocol is not concluded. Afghanistan - Earthquake OCHA Situation Report No. 11

1. The relief operation is fully on track, now reaching all severely destroyed villages with food and shelter materials. More relief supplies are in the pipeline and will be delivered in the next few weeks, much of it by helicopter. In addition, enormous emergency rehabilitation needs remain and must be addressed in the following months. Donor Governments are strongly encouraged to support the Appeal issued last week by UNOCHA for US Dollars 6.8 million for relief and emergency rehabilitation.

China - Floods OCHA Situation Report No. 2

1. The United Nations Resident Coordinator in Beijing reports that, according to the situation report issued by the Ministry of Civil Affairs on 18 June 1998, some prefectures in Hunan, Jiangxi and Fujian province were struck by heavy rainfall and storms since 12 June, causing serious flooding.

Democratic People's Republic of Korea Situation Report 15 May - 15 June 1998

The Thematic Roundtable on Agricultural Recovery and Environment Protection (AREP) took place in Geneva on 28 and 29 May. The conference, attended by major donors, World Bank, IMF and a number of NGOs succeeded in establishing a positive dialogue between DPRK and the international community. India - Cyclone OCHA Situation Report No. 4

1. The UN Resident Coordinator in New Delhi informs that, according to latest newspaper reports, the total death toll in Kutch-Saurashtra region of Gujarat is rising alarmingly. The Minister of State for Home, Mr. Haren Pandya said that 1,126 bodies have been recovered until 18 June and the death toll could be as high as 3,000. Russian Federation Yakutia Floods - OCHA Appeal for International Assistance

General Situation

Floods caused by melting snow in eastern Russia have claimed 13 lives and made 36,000 people homeless in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The major Siberian river, the Lena, and the Aldan have both flooded over their banks in recent weeks as a result of the springtime snow melt. Authorities had to use helicopters to evacuate 900 people from four riverside villages to the east of Yakutsk. In total 42,600 people had to be evacuated. State of emergency has been declared in the region.

Afghanistan - Earthquake OCHA Situation Report No. 10

Appeal for International Assistance

1. At today's donor meeting in Islamabad, chaired by the UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Afghanistan, an Appeal for USD 6.87 million was launched. The Appeal covers both the relief operations and the emergency rehabilitation needs. The emergency rehabilitation phase is expected to last from mid-July to mid-October, at which time winter sets in. N.B. It does not include costs being incurred on account of the ongoing relief operation (e.g. helicopter support).

Tajikistan Humanitarian Situation Report May 1998
