UN OCHA Flash Update 7, Cyclone Mahasen, Bangladesh and Myanmar

After making landfall in Bangladesh and moving forward to the northeast away from Myanmar, Tropical Cyclone Mahasen weakened and dissipated on 17 May. Relevant storm tracking sites stopped tracking the weather system once it moved over northern Bangladesh early on 17 May.

As of midday today, the Government of Bangladesh had reported six deaths, and a limited number of people in flood affected districts were injured. While assessments are ongoing, in light of the potential damage anticipated over the last five days, reported damage to houses has been limited.

Key issues

● Israeli forces injure around 60 Palestinians in protests and clashes across the West Bank. Three Israeli forces individuals also injured.

● Israeli forces demolish 16 residential and livelihood structures, displacing 14 people and affecting over 80 others.

● One Palestinian man sentenced to death by the local authorities in Gaza, allegedly for collaborating with what the court described as a “hostile element”.

Sudan Humanitarian Bulletin Issue 19 | 6 - 12 May 2013

Highlights

• UN calls on Government and SPLM-N to stop fighting for one-week to vaccinate 150,000 children in war-affected areas not under Government control.

• Over 45,000 people have been displaced by armed conflicts in Abu Kershola and Um Berimbita areas of South Kordofan as well as in North Kordofan.

• Some 112,800 people displaced by fighting in South and North Kordofan have received emergency relief since July 2012.

UN OCHA Flash Update 6, Cyclone Mahasen, Bangladesh and Myanmar

Tropical Cyclone Mahasen, which has been downgraded to a tropical storm, made landfall in Bangladesh on the morning of 16 May (local time), bringing strong winds and heavy rains to Chittagong and surrounding districts. On its current path, it will continue to move northeast from Myanmar and towards the eastern states of India. The current speed at the centre of the storm is around 80 km/h and is expected to reduce its wind speed to 55 km/h as it continues to move inland.

Flash Update 1 - Confinement in Montecristo (Bolívar)

According to reports from the Unidad para la Atención y Reparación Integral a las Víctimas (UARIV) and the Ombudsman’s Office Early Warning System (EWS), in the towns of El Dorado, El Paraíso and the area of Mina 6 in rural Montecristo municipality (Bolívar department), on the Caribbean coast, at least 1,000 people are confined following blockades and prohibitions on vehicle movement (cars, motorcycles and animals) by the ELN guerrillas, as well as other acts of violence such as the seizure and death of civilians, threats and extortions.

South Sudan Humanitarian Bulletin, 6 - 12 May 2013
