Flooding in Sumatra, Indonesia

This collection of satellite imagery illustrates the onset of flooding conditions near Sungaipenuh in Jambi Province in the west of the Indoensian island of Sumatra. The latest image from Wednesday (November 29) shows extensive floodwaters (light blue) next to the lake Danau Kerinci (dark blue) south east of Sungaipenuh. The extent of these floodwaters is made clear when compared with archived imagery from drier times on May 5 this year more than a year ago, on October 26, 1999. Images are supplied by the USGS Earth Explorer archives.

Small Arms Survey: Re-armament in Sierra Leone - One Year After the Lomé Peace Agreement

Exploring the ability of rebels and the government to obtain weapons in Sierra Leone, this report questions the efficacy of previous and current armament and disarmament policies.

The report is set in the context of the Lomé Peace Agreement of 7 July 1999 between the Government of Sierra Leone and the Revolutionary United Front. This inquiry examines the deaths of three UNHCR staff members, Mr Samson Aregahegn (Supply Officer), Mr Carlos Caceres-Collazo (Protection Officer), and Mr Pero Simundza (Telecommunications Operator), who were killed in Atambua, Indonesia during an attack on UNHCR's office on 6 September, 2000.

Besides establishing the sequence of events, the report analyses key elements relating to the actions and responses of UNHCR, including the context in which events unfolded, the interpretation of events, the actions and decisions taken and the consequences these.
