This bibliography compiles references of material relating to displaced women and gender in particular, as well as to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and refugees material in general.

Collected for the purpose of an analysis on the gender dimension of internal displacement, the bibliography provides UNICEF and other agencies as well as interested scholars with a comprehensive overview over the relevant literature.

Evaluating Humanitarian Assistance Programmes in Complex Emergencies

This review examines evaluation as a tool to improve accountability and performance in the operation of the international humanitarian aid system.

It seeks to improve the consistency and quality of evaluation methodologies, and enhance the accountability function of evaluation, contribute to institutionalising lessons learned, and identify better methods for monitoring performance of humanitarian aid operations.

PNG's PM leaves disaster appeal fund

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister, Bill Skate, has removed himself as Chairman of the Aitape Tidal Wave Disaster Appeal Fund, to prove to donors that their money will NOT be diverted for political ends.

Sean Dorney reports, Mr Skate is now the patron of the fund which raised millions of dollars for the nine-thousand survivors of the tsunami which killed more than two-thousand people in July.

Flood-hit Bangladesh desperate as toll passes 500

DHAKA, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Millions of Bangladeshis on Tuesday fought a grim battle against the country's worst floods in a decade as the death toll moved past 500.

Bangladesh is increasingly desperate for foreign aid to reach its shores as disease, drownings, mudslides, house collapses and snake bite deepen the nation's misery.

The flooding has killed at least 513 people and left 25 million homeless or marooned with three-quarters of the country submerged, disaster management and health officials said.

Kabila shifts war focus East, targets Kalemie

KINSHASA, Sept 1 (Reuters) - President Laurent Kabila has shifted the focus of his one-month war against Rwandan-backed rebels, saying that his forces have encircled the eastern town of Kalemie.

Annan urges foreign troops to leave war-torn Congo

JOHANNESBURG, Sept 1 (Reuters) - U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan appealed on Tuesday for foreign troops to withdraw from the Democratic Republic of the Congo as a precursor to a peace settlement .

Annan, in South Africa for the 12th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit in Durban, said he backed moves by the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to try to end a month-long war between Laurent Kabila's loyalists and Rwandan-backed rebels.

The United Nations Security Council has called for a ceasefire, the withdrawal of all foreign forces and the start of a political dialogue to end the war in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The council says it also supported the territorial integrity of the Congo and all regional diplomatic attempts aimed at a peaceful settlement of the conflict.

Flooding in Bangladesh : Humanitarian Aid worth ECU 1 million

The European Commission has cleared a package of humanitarian aid worth ECU 1 million for victims of the flooding in Bangladesh. The aid, managed by the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO), will enable humanitarian organisations to provide emergency relief to the victims of the floods in the coming months.
This year the effects of the recent flooding have exceeded Bangladesh's capacity for self-reliance, in particular in the Northwest and Central districts (over 60% of the landmass). Up to 20 million people have been affected.

Albania says Kosovo needs international intervention

Saudi sends aid to flood-stricken Bangladesh

DUBAI, Sept 1 (Reuters) - A Saudi-based relief agency said on Tuesday it had distributed food and medical supplies to victims of Bangladesh's worst floods in a decade, which have killed more than 500 people.

The official Saudi Press Agency (SPA) said the International Islamic Relief Organisation had given rice, sugar, oil, water purification pills and medicine to flood victims.

More bodies pulled from Nepal landslide, toll 50

KATHMANDU, Sept 1 (Reuters) - Relief workers on Tuesday recovered four more bodies from beneath a muddy landslide in the Himalayan kingdom of Nepal, pushing the death toll from the disaster to 50, officials said.

"We pulled out from the mud four bodies of women and children," Krishna Prasad Adhikary, a rescue official, told Reuters by phone from Syangja, 250 km (160 miles) west of Kathmandu.

Local media reports said about 70 people were missing and feared dead after heavy monsoon rains triggered the natural disaster, which struck villages in remote areas at the weekend.

American Secretary of State, Madeleine Albright, has met the commanding officer of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, NATO, to discuss military options for intervention in the Kosovo crisis.

A spokesman says Ms Albright received reports on how NATO is planning possible military action in the Yugoslav province.

The spokesman also stressed that the use of force remains a viable option.

Ms Albright and NATO Commander, U-S general Wesley Clarke, also reportedly reviewed the role each member nation would play in any planned intervention.
