The World Food Situation: Recent Developments, Emerging Issues and Long-Term Prospects

Presenting assessment of prospects for global food security over the next quarter century, this report reviews recent events that have significantly influenced food security as well as key emerging issues that security in the coming years.

In addition, the report analyses the implications of these recent events and emerging issues for agricultural research and food policy reform in developing countries.

The report draws upon revised and updated information from IFPRI's global food model, which projects food demand, supply, and trade to the year 2020.

Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction

The Mine Ban Treaty is the international agreement that bans antipersonnel landmines. Sometimes referred to as the Ottawa Convention, its official title is: The 1997 Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer or Anti-Personnel Mines and on Their Destruction.

The treaty is the most comprehensive international instrument for ridding the world of the scourge of antipersonnel mines. It deals with everything from mine use, production and trade, to victim assistance, mine clearance and stockpile destruction.

UNDP to step up demining activities, train police office officers

UNDP TO STEP UP DEMINING ACTIVITIES, TRAIN POLICE OFFICERS IN SOMALIA.UNDP's Crisis Committee has allocated US$1.2 million for a civil protection programme in Somalia that will help reintegrate ex-militia members into civil society, train police officers and support demining operations. The training programme for police officers will emphasize human rights, and seek to involve more women. Demining teams will be composed of local Somalis from various clans who will receive training and equipment through the programme.

Somali warlords to hold reconciliation meeting this month

Somali warlords have reached an agreement to hold a national reconciliation meeting in southern Somalia later this month.

Somali sources in Cairo say the meeting is aimed at setting up a government for Somalia.

The AFP newsagency quoting a source close to warlord Ali Mahdi Mohammad, says the chiefs have agreed that the meeting will be held in the town of Baidoa, southwest of Mogadishu, on December 20th.

Somali faction leaders are currently meeting in Cairo, to finalise preparations for the summit of the chiefs.

UNDP is providing funding and technical assistance to help the Governments of Ecuador and Ethiopia respond to massive destruction in their countries brought on by heavy flooding that is being attributed to El Niño. In the coastal region of Ecuador, some 35,000 people are estimated to be affected by the flooding, which has destroyed homes, banana plantations and forced the closure of roads and bridges. Australian navy delivers relief supplies to PNG's Milne Bay

The Australian Navy has delivered drinking water and other relief supplies to drought-affected islands in Papua New Guinea's Milne Bay Province.

A spokesman says two Naval ships over the weekend delivered 60-thousand litres of fresh water to Samarai Island, the province's former administrative headquarters, and to nearby islands in the China Strait.

It was the first delivery of water under the Australian government's relief operation in P-N-G, which began at the end of October and is expected to last until the end of March.

Democratic Republic of Congo to bar international media broadcasts

The Democratic Republic of Congo says international media broadcasts in the country are to be blocked.
A Government spokesman and Information Minister, Raphael Ghenda, says all foreign radio broadcasts are being cut for an indefinite period.

He says the move has been triggered by a disinformation campaign involving certain foreign media, which he accused of trying to undermine the country's government.

The main international stations present on the country's airwaves are the British Broadcasting Corporation, Radio France Internationale and the Voice of America.

1. The current short rains season in Kenya has seen exceptionally heavy rainfall, in many areas the most intense in 40 years. Secretary-General's investigative team in Congo-Kinshasa prepares to go to northern town of Mbandaka

United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan's investigative team in the Democratic Republic of Congo is preparing to go to the northern town of Mbandaka to start its field work.

According to a United Nations Spokesman, the team, which has been sent to probe allegations of human rights violations in the country, met with President Laurent Kabila on Sunday and received assurances from him that its members could soon begin their work.
