Guidelines on the Protection of Refugee Women

Developed to help the staff of UNHCR and its implementing partners to identify the specific protection issues, problems and risks facing refugee women, these Guidelines discuss the following issues:

- Traditional protection concerns
- Measures to improve the protection of refugee women
- Actions to prevent or deter protection problems from arising
- Approaches for helping women whose rights have been violated
- Steps to ameliorate and report upon protection problems that do arise

TORRENTIAL RAINS IN ANHUI PROVINCE DURING 18 MAY TO 19 JUNE WITH RAINFALL OF OVER 400 CM IN TWO THIRDS OF THE PROVINCE, HAVE RESULTED IN OVERFLOWING OF RIVERS AND WATER LOGGINGS CAUSING HEAVY FLOODING THROUGHOUT THE PROVINCE. IN HUAIHE, CHU AND YANGTSE RIVERS FLOOD LEVELS WERE REGISTRED AS CLOSE TO OR HIGHEST IN HISTORY.

1. A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE OCCURRED NEAR THE NORTH COAST OF SULAWESI ISLAND, ABOUT 250 KM WEST OF MANADO TOWN AT 05:18 GMT ON 20 JUNE 1991.

2. MAGNITUDE COMPUTED AT 7.1 ON RICHTER SCALE. PRELIMINARY HYPOCENTER'S LATITUDE 1.2 DEGREES NORTH, LONGITUDE 122.8 DEGREES EAST, ORIGIN TIME 05:18:52.1 UTC, DEPTH NORMAL.

3. NO REPORTS OF DAMAGE OR CASUALTIES RECEIVED AT THIS TIME. UNDRO LIAISING WITH UNDRO/UNDP REPRESENTATIVE IN JAKARTA AND SCIENTIFIC INSTITUTIONS.

1. HEAVY RAINFALL CAUSED COLLAPSE ON 18 JUNE OF WATER STORAGE TANK IN ANTOFAGASTA, LARGEST CITY IN NORTHERN CHILE (SOME 1,400 KM NORTH OF CAPITAL SANTIAGO).

2. COMBINATION OF RAIN AND TANK COLLAPSE LED TO MUD FLOW WHICH, ACCORDING CURRENT ESTIMATES BY MINISTRY HEALTH, KILLED 52 AND INJURED 20 PEOPLE. SOME 2,000 PEOPLE AFFECTED BY THE EVENT.

3. CHILEAN RED CROSS DRAWING UPON STOCKS TO DISTRIBUTE TENTS AND BLANKETS.

2. RED CROSS FIRST ASSESSMENT OF CASUALTIES AND DAMAGE INDICATES 10 TO 15 VILLAGES SERIOUSLY AFFECTED: 7 DEAD, 62 INJURED AND 15,000 TO 25,000 MADE HOMELESS. 455 TENTS, 3,000 BLANKETS AND ONE WHO EMERGENCY HEALTH KIT DISTRIBUTED.

1. TOWARDS END OF MAY, STORMS AND SURGES AFFECTED IN PARTICULAR FAR SOUTHERN AND FAR NORTHERN PARTS OF COUNTRY. THE 1,200 ISLANDS (202 ARE INHABITED) ARE ALL VERY LOW-LYING AND HENCE MOST VULNERABLE TO STORMS. IN RECENT YEARS CYCLONES IN REGION HAVE SPARED MALDIVES. THESE STORMS, HOWEVER, CAUSED MAXIMUM WIND SPEEDS EVER RECORDED (90 MILES/HOUR) IN THIS COUNTRY.
