Humanitarian assistance and development cooperation pursue different aims and follow different principles. Their separation – while important to protect the independence of humanitarian action – has negative side effects. This paper seeks to contribute to the international debate by clarifying concepts, analyzing these effects and exploring donor strategies for addressing them.

Misconceptions about food assistance

International food aid is a longstanding, valuable instrument for responding to food emergencies around the world. Over the past decade or so, the food assistance toolbox has expanded significantly, beyond the traditional shipment of commodities from donor countries. In order to speed up delivery and reduce costs, most donors now buy a majority of their food aid commodities in the developing world, a practice known as local or regional purchase or procurement (LRP).

School Safety Baseline Study

Introduction

The present study is in response to commitments made during the second session of the United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction in June 2009. The purpose of those commitments was to assess the level of disaster resilience in all schools in disaster-prone countries by 2011 and have all related government‘s agencies develop a national plan for school safety by 2015.

Community Case Management of Severe Acute Malnutrition in Southern Bangladesh

Summary

Bangladesh has the fourth-highest number of children – around 600,000 at any one time – suffering from severe acute malnutrition (SAM) in the world. Currently, ongoing national programs (such as the National Nutrition Program) do not include an effective mechanism of identifying or treating young children who suffer from SAM. This prospective cohort study examined the effectiveness and feasibility of adding the diagnosis and treatment of SAM to the community case management package delivered by community health workers outside health facilities in Barisal, Bangladesh.
