CHAD Food Security Outlook Update May 2010

- Food stocks for poor households in southwestern Batha and Nord are fully depleted, which has led to the selling off of small ruminants at half price and to increased use of coping strategies of last resort: in particular digging into ant hills to find wild grass seeds. Forty to fifty percent reductions in the usual daily food ration are being seen among women and children.

- Despite the start of food distribution projects (subsidized sales, general food distributions), food access issues persist in areas at risk of food insecurity. Cereal prices continue to

Report
AlertNet
27 May 2010 11:27:00 GMT

Written by: George Fominyen

DAKAR (AlertNet) - The withdrawal of U.N. peacekeepers from Chad risks restricting the movement of humanitarian workers in the volatile northeast of the country and limiting their access to camps hosting about 500,000 displaced from Chad, Sudan and the Central African Republic, aid workers say.

The protection of civilians in the violence-ridden region of the country comes under Chadian responsibility on Thursday as part of the drawdown of the United Nations mission to Chad and the Central African Republic (MINURCAT) by year's end.

* Only $2 million raised for Chad so far

* Food shortages already prompting migrations

By Moumine Ngarmbassa

MAO, Chad, May 25 (Reuters) - Relief efforts for two million people facing food shortages in Chad are suffering because donors are concentrating aid on neighbouring Niger, a United Nations agency warned on Tuesday.

Niger is seen at the centre of a looming food crisis in the Sahel, the strip of land stretching across the south of the Sahara where some 10 million people are facing hunger in coming months because of poor rains last year.
