International Crisis Group Annual Report 2009

The global economic meltdown beginning in the latter part of 2008 had its effect on Crisis Group, as on every other organisation dependent on government, foundation and corporate income. Food Security and Livelihoods Programming in Conflict: A Review

Conflict affects all aspects of livelihoods. War strategies often deliberately undermine livelihoods and war economies may develop, where a powerful elite benefits from war by using violent or exploitative practices. War directly impacts on livelihoods through the destruction, looting and theft of key assets, and indirectly through the loss of basic services and access to employment, markets, farms or pastures. As a result, most people's livelihood strategies become extremely restricted and may involve considerable risks to personal safety. Contemporary

Cluster Designs to Assess the Prevalence of Acute Malnutrition by Lot Quality Assurance Sampling: A Validation Study by Computer Simulation - Journal of the Royal Statistical Society Series A

To assess acute malnutrition with a population based survey a large sample size is generally required. This is true even when lot quality assurance sampling (LQAS), an otherwise time and cost efficient method, is used. Cluster sampling, or sampling observations in batches, offers an alternative to the large simple random sample size that would typically be needed for LQAS analysis.

The study examines the classification error of three cluster designs, a 67X3, a 33X6 and a sequential sampling scheme, to assess the prevalence of acute malnutrition with LQAS. The study

ECHO Annual Review 2008

Thousands of lives lost, hundreds of thousands of people uprooted and displaced with no access to food, water or any other means of subsistence. Disasters, whether man-made or natural, cause untold devastation and suffering. When they happen, it is our human duty to stand by those in need. We must also do everything possible to prevent the foreseeable consequences of disasters. This is the concrete expression of European solidarity, a genuine cornerstone of our founding values.

In 2008, the Union brought relief to 120 million people in more than 60 countries with humanitarian funding
