UN sends medicine to fight infections brought on by deadly cold snap in Afghanistan

Responding to a rise in pneumonia, bronchitis and other acute respiratory infections in Afghanistan following a wave of record cold temperatures there, the United Nations health agency is sending antibiotics for thousands of people and putting in place a system to protect many more from catching the illnesses.

"Early recognition and prompt treatment are essential if we are to save lives," UN spokesman Adrian Edwards told a press briefing in Kabul, the capital. He noted that acute respiratory infections account for 20 per cent of all deaths among children under five.

Pakistan asks Indian troops to give "breathing space" to Kashmiris

Islamabad_(dpa) _ As India and Pakistan continue their talks on the Kashmir dispute, Islamabad on Monday said Indian troops must at least be relocated to create "breathing space" for the population of the Himalayan region.

Initially repositioning India's 700,000 security personnel away from more densely populated areas will remove the psychological barrier faced by inhabitants, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Tasneem Aslam told a press briefing in the capital.

"Since the Indian troops are in such large numbers the incidents of human rights violations also go up,"

India-Pakistan: Kashmiri leaders agree to set up working groups

ISLAMABAD, Jan 20: Chairman of the All Parties Hurriyet Conference (APHC) Mirwaiz Umar Farooq has said that leaders from both sides of Kashmir have agreed to set up working groups to enhance mutual interaction as part of intra-Kashmir dialogue aimed at contributing towards the resolution of the Kashmir issue.

Tsunami-affected women in India sell kidneys for survival

New Delhi_(dpa) _ Poverty-stricken Indian women affected by the December 2004 tsunami have been selling their kidneys for survival, news reports said Monday.

"During an inquiry by the revenue divisional officer, we found about 35 women of Tsunami Nagar (a temporary shelter) have sold their kidneys," Ranvir Prasad, an official of Thiruvallur district in southern Tamil Nadu state was quoted as saying by the Indian Express newspaper.

Kodankudi village in Nagapattinam district is one of many hamlets that dot India's Tamil Nadu state - a small village situated in a low-lying flood-prone zone near the ocean and rivers. Indian PM hopes for lasting treaty with Pakistan

NEW DELHI, Jan 8, 2007 (AFP) - Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Monday he hoped that India and Pakistan would eventually be able to sign a long-term peace treaty.

"I earnestly hope that relations between our two countries become so friendly that we can generate an atmosphere of trust between each other and that the two nations are able to agree on a treaty of peace, security and friendship," Singh said.

His comments came ahead of a visit to Pakistan, scheduled for January 13, by Indian Foreign Minister Pranab Mukherjee.

Death toll in cold wave reaches 65 in north India

PATNA, India, Jan 5, 2007 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- The cold wave sweeping across north Indian state Bihar has claimed 65 lives in the past four days, local press reported Friday.

About 34 people died Thursday, 11 on Wednesday, 13 on Tuesday and seven on Monday due to cold wave, leading Hindi newspaper Hindustan reported.

The minimum temperature has dipped to as low as 5 degrees Celsius with foggy weather bringing untold miseries to the destitute, footpath dwellers and beggars.

Winter chill kills 80 in northern India

RANCHI, India, Jan 5 (Reuters) - Cold weather across northern and eastern India has killed at least 80 people in the past week, forcing authorities to close schools and colleges and deliver firewood to the homeless, officials said on Friday.

Kashmir leaders to visit Pakistan to push peace

NEW DELHI, Jan 4 (Reuters) - Kashmir's main political separatists will visit Pakistan this month to try set up a permanent peace dialogue process to help end a 17-year revolt in the disputed Himalayan region, a top leader said on Thursday.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, chairman of the moderate faction of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference, said his team would hold talks with Pakistani groups about President Pervez Musharraf's proposals for a phased plan to resolve the Kashmir dispute.

South Asia tsunami: Christian Children's Fund completes phase two of tsunami reconstruction Program

At the second year anniversary, Christian Children's Fund (CCF) has completed the second phase of a three-year program of recovery and reconstruction. CCF has collected $19,080,054.68 for tsunami relief, recovery and reconstruction efforts in India, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. This includes $11,221,699 million in public contributions and $7,858,355.68 million in grant awards.
