Indonesia flooding and quake: Rebuilding two years after the tsunami

In addition to the recent December 18 earthquake in Sumatra (where CWS continues to respond to the needs of quake-affected families), heavy rains are now causing flooding in the north, east, and central Aceh regions of Sumatra. Some 50,000 people are displaced from their homes, and fear of the floodwaters is keeping many from returning home. Food, water and sanitation, hygiene kits, and basic supplies are needed, and CWS and partners are currently assessing medical needs in the region. CWS is helping to provide much-needed supplies to those affected

From the earliest reports of the terrible devastation caused by the earthquake and tsunami on 26 December 2004, it was clear to humanitarian organizations like Oxfam that we would be required to provide emergency response and reconstruction on an unprecedented scale.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

Indonesia has made significant strides in reducing poverty and strengthening democracy since the economic crisis and political transformation of 1997-1998. However, a number of problems remain. Over 50% of the population lives on less than US$2 per day and an estimated 37 million people live below the poverty line according to the national definition(1). The number of the 'near poor' in Indonesia is estimated to be 115 million(2). The country is still designated a low-income food-deficit country, ranking 108th of 177 countries in the United Nations

Singapore Red Cross contributes 5,000 food packs for victims of the Indonesia flood situation

In response to a request by sister national society, Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI), the Singapore Red Cross (SRC) will be contributing 5,000 food packs for victims of the Indonesia flood situation in Aceh and North Sumatra.

The 5,000 food packs, costing approximately S$30,000 comprise milk biscuits for baby, cream crackers and bottled water. The food packs will be packed in Medan before being sent to Aceh and North Sumatra for the flood victims. PMI will be coordinating the distribution of the food packs through their volunteers in various chapters of Aceh and North Sumatra.

Ex-rebel officially wins governor race in Indonesia's war-torn Aceh

Banda Aceh, Indonesia_(dpa) _ A former Indonesian rebel and political prisoner on Friday was officially declared the winner in the first-ever direct election for governor in strife-torn Aceh province.

Irwandi Yusuf, who two years ago was languishing in an Acehnese prison, won 38.2 per cent of the vote, the Aceh Independent Election Commission said.

His closest rival, Ahmad Humam Hamid, an Acehnese intellectual, received 16.62 per cent of the votes in the eight-candidate race.

Aid finally reaches isolated Indonesian flood victims

BENTENG ANYAR, Indonesia, Dec 29, 2006 (AFP) - Aid has finally reached the most isolated areas of Sumatra island a week after flash floods killed more than 100 people and forced 400,000 to flee, Indonesian officials said Friday.

Relief workers had faced problems with slow and limited supplies, as well as access difficulties due to the floods and landslides which have destroyed roads and bridges in worst-hit Aceh and neighbouring North Sumatra.

"Maybe relief distribution has not been perfect but we have managed to reach all previously isolated areas,"

Indonesia: WFP emergency food reaches people affected by massive flooding in Aceh

JAKARTA - Within hours of the first reports of devastating floods this week in the Indonesian province of Aceh, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) moved rapidly to deliver emergency supplies by air and road to some 127,000 displaced people in the hardest hit districts of Aceh Tamiang and Gayo Lues.

Red Cross relief operation underway in flood ravaged Indonesia

The Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia - PMI) is distributing vital relief supplies to tens of thousands of people who have been affected by extensive flooding along the east coast of Aceh and Northern Sumatra in Indonesia.

Two days of continuous and torrential rain left much of the region under water. In some areas downpours triggered mudslides and washed away roads and bridges, making access often impossible by land. 60 people have been confirmed dead and a further 178 are missing.

As dawn breaks and while other are still curled up lazily in their beds, the fishermen of Banda Aceh are sorting out their catch from a night of hard work at sea.

"This is our life, up at night, barely resting at day," says fisherman Usman as he wades through his harvest of deep sea fish, hauling them into large plastic containers.

Usman, 52, says he doesn't mind the long hours of fishing. "This is the only thing I've done since I was 12 years old."

JAKARTA, Dec 28, 2006 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Former pro-Indonesia militia commanders in West Timor have denied involvement in the recent riots in Timor-Leste, while the Timor government is offering to repatriate refugees from Indonesia, a newspaper reported Thursday.

Former commander of the Integration Fighters militia Alfonso Hendrike Pinto and fellow militia leader Joanico Cesario Bello made the denial while meeting with visiting Timor Foreign Minister Jose Luiz Gutteres in the Timor-Leste Consulate in Indonesia's East Nusa Tenggara province Wednesday.

Indonesia: First round of joint land titling certificates issued in Aceh

Banda Aceh, 28 December 2006 - BPN Aceh Besar Land Office today issued the first joint land certificates for residents of Meunasah Bak'u village in Leupung as part of the Joint Land Titling (JLT) Program that was initiated by BPN and Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Executing Agency (BRR) for NAD-Nias.

U.S. provides assistance to flood victims in Indonesia

Washington, D.C. - The U.S. Government, through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), has provided $100,000 to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to support the Indonesian Red Cross' ongoing emergency flood response efforts on Sumatra Island.
