Red Cross continues to meet emergency water needs in Sri Lanka

The sight of Mohadin Musammil and his team of Red Cross volunteers is a reassuring reminder to the people of Pottuvil in Eastern Sri Lanka that their plight has not been forgotten. Every day the volunteers can be seen, moving from house to house with their buckets and ladders in this tsunami-ravaged region. Their job is to check the water quality and if necessary, clean the wells along Pottuvil's coastal belt.

Australian winter support for Pakistan earthquake survivors

Australia will tonight fly a further 1,700 woollen blankets to Pakistan for immediate distribution to survivors of the recent devastating earthquakes, the Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs Bruce Billson, announced today.

'The new shipment is in addition to the 4,800 woollen blankets, 330,000 water purification tablets and 1,080 vials of tetanus immunoglobulin sent to Pakistan last week,' Mr Billson said.

'Australia is responding to fears of significant winter hardship and will send a further 1,000 sleeping bags

The Salvation Army in Mexico provides aid to victims of Hurricane Wilma

The Salvation Army has been working flat out in the tourist resort of Cancun, Mexico, which was hit with the full force of Hurricane Wilma. Sustained winds exceeded 110 miles per hour, with gusts reaching even higher speeds. Tidal surges hit luxury resorts that line a strand of beach between the Caribbean Sea and an alligator-filled lagoon, causing extreme damage. Windows were blown out, walls collapsed and in some cases the sea swelled high enough to reach the third floor.
The cement homes of the local people mostly survived intact, though many suffered from wind-damaged roofing.

CRS reaches more than 50,000 people in Pakistan, India -- Response among most timely, far-reaching

On October 8, a 7.6 magnitude earthquake jolted Pakistan, India and Afghanistan, causing entire villages to disappear under a pile of rubble and earth. The death toll is now estimated at 57,000 in Pakistan and 1,400 in India, with more than 2.5 million affected overall. With temperatures dipping and snowfall reported in the hills, CRS is working around the clock to ensure relief supplies reach people as quickly as possible.

Restoring water supply in Pakistan

- Lack of adequate shelter is still the main challenge for the earthquake affected population.

- Total number of patients evacuated by helicopter to hospitals outside of the affected areas (Islamabad, Rawalpindi,

Chakwal, Jehlum, Taxila and Gujarat) has now reached almost 20,000. The daily number of air evacuations to hospitals has decreased to 80. Of the over 13,000 surgical operations carried out in these hospitals, 436 required amputations.

Mission debriefing: UNHCR's emergency response to South Asia earthquake

There is now just a two week window to save lives before the winter snow sets in. UNHCR has the capacity on the ground with a staff of 320 persons, over 25 years operational experience in Pakistan, as well as stocks of relief items in the region and beyond, to contribute to effort to save lives. Already an emergency response team is operational in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Pakistanadministered Jammu and Kashmir and relief items have been flown into Pakistan with the historic support of NATO member states¹, and are being distributed in the affected areas.

Eritrea: Humanitarian Update 31 Oct 2005

Eritrea will launch a first round nationwide polio vaccination campaign from 11-14 November to immunize children under five as part of an Africa-wide operation aimed at halting the spread of the virus. The campaign comes two months after one polio case was detected near the border with Sudan and several other cases reported in Yemen, Sudan and Ethiopia.
