Situation

1. In parts of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP), extensive flooding occurred due to hot temperatures, with unusually high volumes of snowmelt in the Hindu Kush Mountains overflowing the rivers. The United Nations Resident Coordinator's Office in Islamabad has reported that the water level was rising and the flood situation was likely to worsen. There is extensive damage to property and standing crops, but no life has been lost so far.

94 die in torrential rains, flash floods in India's Gujarat state

AHMEDABAD, India, July 1 (AFP) - At least 94 people have died and some 200,000 have been evacuated due to heavy rains and flash floods in India's western coastal state of Gujarat, officials said Friday amid warnings of worse to come.

"The flood situation is likley to worsen in Gujarat. We have to be prepared for the worst floods," Science Minister Kapil Sibal told reporters in New Delhi. "Only after July 4 or 5 will there be a substantial fall in rainfall."

India: Orissa floods situation report, 1 Jul 2005, 11am


Incessant rains in the coastal districts of Orissa for the last few days due to a low pressure built over Bay of Bengal have resulted in rising of river Baitarani and its tributaries. The rivers are in spate and have affected 2 blocks of Bhadrak district and 2 blocks of Jajpur district. In Angul district Pallahara sub-division has experienced severe rains during the last three days and a total of 757mm rainfall has been recorded over the last three days. Currently the situation is under control. IMD has forecasted that rains will continue to occur in the coastal region of Orissa .

Monsoon floods in India, toll mounts to 130

New Delhi (dpa) - The death toll from monsoon floods in India mounted to 130 on Friday, with about 200,000 people being displaced from their homes.

The torrential rains also threw rail and road traffic out of gear in many parts of the country.

Most of the deaths were reported from the western state of Gujarat. Revenue department officials told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa that 108 people either drowned in flood waters, or were buried alive in mudslides and when buildings collapsed.

Floods and landslides displace thousands in departments of La Libertad and Ahuachapán.

More than 5,000 people fled their homes this week after heavy rains in central and western El Salvador caused floods and landslides. Newspaper articles say that 39 people have died, including 22 of who were in a bus swept away while crossing the Palmarcito River in Sonsanate department.

India: Southwest monsoon 2005 - Current status and prediction for next week 01 Jul 2005

The southwest monsoon had a late start this year. It entered the extreme southeast Bay of Bengal and south Andaman Sea on 26 May, with a delay of 11 days. An extensive cloud mass associated with Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) drifted northwards in the extreme south Arabian Sea in the first week of June. IAF expedites the relief and rescue operations in HP and Gujarat AFMC Cadets rescued from 11,500 feet

The Indian Air Force is carrying out the relief and rescue operations in full swing in the flood-affected states of Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh. IAF has pressed into operations 11 MI17s, 6 MI8s and 4 Cheetas for the said purpose.

In Himachal Pradesh 4 MI17s are continuing relief and rescue work providing succor to the affected people in Sangla, Recong Po and Pooh. The Indian Air Force is carrying a load of blankets, tents and food packets for the badly affected people in the above mentioned

India: Defence forces launch massive rescue and relief mission for worsening flood situation in Gujarat

The Defence Minister Shri Pranab Mukherjee, presently on tour to the United States has directed the defence forces for all out help in extending relief and rescue support to the civilian authorities in the southern Gujarat and Saurashtra regions, consequent to heavy rains leading to high floods there. Accordingly the Army and the Air Force have launched a massive assistance mission in these areas.

A comprehensive status report on the flood situation in different parts of the country is given below:-
GUJARAT

Rainfall:

Very heavy rainfall has been recorded in South and Central Gujarat in last 24 hours. Rainfall is in continuance of very heavy downpour during the last three days. More than 50 talukas have received rainfall exceeding 200 mm.

Mahi, Shedi, Bhadrak, More, Dadar, Dev and Vishwamitri rivers are overflowing.

Water level in Vadodara, Anand and most of the areas in Kheda is upto 10-12 feet. Water has entered in most of the villages and the cities are inundated.

Pakistan floods: Situation Report No. 1

Situation
1. Major rivers in NWFP and the Northern Areas of Pakistan have been in high flood since last week due to heavy snowfall during winter and unprecedented high temperatures prevailing in the region for the last two weeks. The situation is likely to worsen during the next few days as the water level in the rivers is continuously rising that are already in very high floods.

Guyana: Post flood recovery update 30 Jun 2005

Georgetown, GINA, June 30, 2005 - The Planning Recovery and Implementation Secretariat is in the process of distributing flood relief cheques to the initial batch of rice farmers. It has also completed the initial disbursement of the $10,000 household assistance.

During the extended period, May 21 -- 29, numerous claims were made for flood relief, in addition to many appeals and queries.

Head of the Secretariat, Robeson Benn said, "We were surprised to have so many claims, but after verifying these claims payments will be made shortly."
