On Thursday 22 April 2004, two train wagons exploded at Ryongchon Station, Ryongchon County, North Phyongan Province in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The explosion injured approximately 1,300 people, 370 of whom were hospitalised, many with severe injuries. The blast killed 161 people, including 76 children. Relief goods donated to DPRK

Pyongyang, May 29 (KCNA) -- Relief goods were sent to the DPRK by various countries and international organizations in connection with the explosion at Ryongchon Railway Station in North Phyongan Province. Urging aid, U.N official says North Korea facing food crisis

Brussels (dpa) - International aid donors must provide urgent food aid and to North Korea to stave off another humanitarian disaster, a senior United Nations official warned Friday.

"We are concerned about the humanitarian situation in North Korea, especially the food situation," The World Food Programmes representative in Pyongyang, Masood Hyder, told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa during a visit to Brussels.

Train explosion occurred at Ryongchon station in the northern province of Pyongang, North Korea.

- The explosion was caused by an electrical short-circuit during the track switching of wagons loaded with ammonium nitrate fertilizer and tanker wagons (April 24 Korea Central News Agency)

UNICEF Humanitarian Action: DPR Korea donor update 27 May 2004


High rates of malnutrition and diarrhoeal diseases among children, a high maternal mortality ratio, a shortage of drugs and deteriorating education in DPR Korea need to be addressed.

UNICEF received only around 50% of the revised CAP requirements (US$ 14,803,000), including the response to the Ryongchon tragedy.

Essential drugs for 12 million people, textbooks and basic school materials for 650,000 girls and boys, as well as immediate support to 2,000 primary school children in Ryongchon are UNICEF's current priorities.

Japan to offer food, medical assistance to DPRK

TOKYO, May 26, 2004 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Japan has decided to offer the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) a little over 8 billion yen (72 million US dollars) worth of food and medical assistance during a summit meeting last Saturday, Kyodo News reported Wednesday.

The government has decided to provide corn and wheat in food aid to the DPRK, instead of rice, which is more expensive in Japan than other types of grain.

In 2000, Japan provided the DPRK with a total of 600,000 tons of rice, of which 500,000 tons were expensive domestically

a) strategic planning leading to a Common Humanitarian Action Plan (CHAP);
b) resource mobilisation;
c) coordinated programme implementation;
d) joint monitoring and evaluation;
e) revision, if necessary; and
f) reporting on results.

DPR Korea: World Food Program short of aid for North

The United Nation's World Food Program announced yesterday that it has had to halt food supplies to 1 million North Koreans, starting this month.

The agency added that an additional 3.8 million beneficiaries of the food program are in danger of losing their rations beginning in October, if further donations from the international community do not become available.

As a result of a drop in donations, the agency had to borrow 25,000 tons of cereal in February from North Korea's strategic food reserve in order to continue aid.
