Liberia: ECOWAS military mission leaves Monrovia

Monrovia, Liberia (PANA) - A nine-member military mission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) which visited Monrovia Wednesday and Thursday has returned to Accra, Ghana.
Comprising officers from Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Togo and Benin, the mission was led by Nigerian General Festus Okonkwo, commander in chief of the ECOWAS peacekeeping force in Liberia and it was mandated to examine conditions on the ground before deploying West African troops on Monday.

ECOWAS force advance team expected in Liberia

Lagos, Nigeria (PANA) - A 12-member team of top West African military officers is scheduled to leave Accra, Ghana for Monrovia Wednesday on a reconnaissance mission to facilitate the deployment of regional troops to war-torn Liberia, ECOWAS officials told PANA in Lagos. The team is being led on its three-day mission by the ECOWAS Force Commander, Festus Okonkwo, a Nigerian Army Brigadier- General, and also includes chief of operations as well as logistics experts. The advance team would travel with a Ghanaian Air Force plane.

ECOWAS summit on Liberia in Accra Thursday

Accra, Ghana (PANA) - ECOWAS leaders are to meet in Accra, Ghana Thursday in continuing efforts to end the bloodbath in Liberia, ECOWAS sources in the Ghanaian capital, venue of Liberian peace talks.
The sources said the summit had become necessary because the fighting had made conditions for the deployment of peace-keeping troops difficult, amid heavy loss of lives and grave humanitarian crisis.

AU seeks funds for African Mission in Burundi

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - African ambassadors to the African Union (AU) have reiterated AU's appeal to the European Union and the United Nations for assistance to ensure the full deployment and operationalisation of the African Mission in Burundi.
In a communiqué in Addis Ababa Tuesday, the envoys said a unique opportunity now exists to achieve lasting peace and reconciliation in Burundi.

The communiqué followed the ambassadors' meeting under the AU's Central Organ for Conflict Prevention, Management and Reconciliation.

Angola: AU backs call for conference on anti-personnel mines

Maputo, Mozambique (PANA) - The African Union summit under way here has welcomed Angola's proposal to convene a continental conference on the problem of anti-personnel mines, and the Assembly immediately directed the Commission to facilitate the rapid organisation of that conference.
African leaders have underscored the importance of demining, as well as assistance to victims of landmines and the rehabilitation of mined areas for the socio-economic reconstruction of Angola.

They have appealed to the international community to contribute further to post-conflict reconstruction efforts

Ivorian government moots bill on amnesty

Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire (PANA) - The Ivorian government has drafted a bill on amnesty for submission to the National Assembly, according to a statement issued here Friday.
The bill covers all breaches of national security, whoever the perpetrators or their accomplices, military or civilian, in the country or in exile.

However, the text, which also takes into account military offences such as insubordination and desertion, does not apply to economic offences and serious violations of human rights and international humanitarian law.

Arab League secretary general pushes for peace in Sudan

Juba, Sudan (PANA) - Arab League secretary general Amr Moussa is in Sudan to boost efforts to end two decades of war between the Khartoum government and the rebel Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A).
Moussa, who arrived Monday in Juba on a three-day trip, sounded upbeat about prospects in peace negotiations.

"We are all working for the realisation of peace in the Sudan and all matters are now moving toward achieving this goal," he said in a statement.

Sudanese leader marks coup anniversary with peace promise

Juba, Sudan (PANA) - Sudanese President Omar El Bashir on Monday marked the 14th anniversary of the military coup that brought him to power by promising to end Sudan's 20-year civil war that has killed more than two million people.
Bashir told a crowd here the fact that he observed the anniversary for the first time in south central Juba, a region hard-hit by war but was enjoying a period of calm, "meant that peace has already come."

He congratulated the people of Juba for "the atmosphere of peace" and pledged to "rebuild everything destroyed by the war."
