At its inception in April 2003, the Ituri Interim Administration (IIA) was assigned two specific missions that constitute its mandate: reconciling communities (pacification) and effectively manage public services in Ituri (administration). DRC: Thousands of illegal diamond miners expelled

KINSHASA, 30 January (IRIN) - At least 10,000 Congolese, mostly illegal miners, have been expelled from Angola since December 2003 under inhumane conditions, a Congolese human rights organization said on Thursday.
"They were forced back by the military and hundreds of others have been arrested and detained in subhuman conditions," Dolly Ibefo, vice-president of the rights body, Voice of the Voiceless (Voix des Sans Voix), said.

DRC: MONUC secures key locations to ease aid delivery

KIGALI, 30 January (IRIN) - The UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, known as MONUC, has secured two strategic points that would enable a convoy of truck carrying humanitarian aid to reach hunger-stricken population in parts of the eastern province of South Kivu.
"These are the most crucial points where we anticipated security problems," Sebastian Lapierre, a MONUC spokesman in Bukavu, told IRIN on Thursday.

Federal Foreign Office to finance food aid for 87,500 refugees in the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Federal Foreign Office will give German Agro Action some 382,000 euro from its humanitarian budget to finance an aid project in Ituri Province in the east of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. German Agro Action will use this money to locally purchase foodstuffs such as maize flour, pulses, palm oil and salt to feed 87,500 internally displaced people and returnees for four months. UN mission's partner organization starts aid convoy in eastern DR Congo

A convoy carrying food and other assistance is rolling along the road from Bukavu to Mwenga in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) distributing needed items to families, the United Nations mission in the country (MONUC) reported today.
The operation by a MONUC partner, the CARITAS social service agency, started yesterday and is expected to last for several weeks. It will serve 5,500 families, MONUC said, mainly internally displaced persons (IDPs) who fled their homes during an attack by Interahamwe militia about two months ago.

Zambia: Influx of DRC refugees as WFP stocks run low

JOHANNESBURG, 29 January (IRIN) - Zambia has received an influx of Congolese refugees fleeing fighting over the past three months in the northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the UN's refugee agency, UNHCR, told IRIN on Thursday.
UNHCR spokeswoman Melita Sunjic said "in November we had 621 cases, and after that we've had an average of 500 per month" arriving in Zambia from the DRC.

DRC: Military staff in the school of human rights

A practical excuse most frequently used in DRC by military violators of human rights is either the misunderstanding or even the ignorance of the existence of such rights. Yet, in Kisangani, it is the military command of the 9th military region that called on MONUC Human Rights Unit to organize a seminar in this area. DRC: Guarded aid convoy departs for remote east Congo

KIGALI, Jan 28 (Reuters) - A big aid convoy protected by U.N. helicopter gunships set off from the eastern Congolese town of Bukavu on Wednesday to deliver supplies to remote villages struggling to recover from five years of war.

UN mission in DR Congo renovates and erects buildings for students

The United Nations mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), implementing "rapid impact projects," has renovated a building to house university students and built another to train the deaf.
Starting at the end of September, the mission said, it spent $13,000 renovating the Boyoma student residence at the University of Kisangani. For four months, the UN Organization Mission in the DRC (MONUC) repaired the roof, replaced windows and made the water supply, electricity and sanitation systems workable, so that 190 students now have a decent place to live and study.
