US Diplomat, Parliamentarians Observe Govt-Karenni Rebel Peace Talks

Observers including an official from the US Embassy and members of Parliament were present on Wednesday at union-level peace talks between the government and Karenni rebels, where the two sides discussed military affairs.

The talks took place in Loikaw, the capital of Karenni State, and were attended by senior government officials including Minister Aung Min of the President’s Office, Energy Minister Than Htay and Karenni State’s Chief Minister Khin Maung Oo, as well as members of the government-affiliated Myanmar Peace Center (MPC).

Syria’s internally displaced – ‘The world has forgotten us’

On a recent visit to a camp near Atmeh, just inside Syria near the Turkish border, some 21,000 people were sheltering amid hellish conditions.

Heavy rain leaked into the tents and had turned the clay soil into thick slippery mud, raw sewage flowed between the tents. The food being distributed was insufficient and of very poor quality and large numbers of people complained of medical conditions for which they were receiving no treatment.

20 June 2013 - Syrian Mass Exodus Refugee Crisis

Children are dying by the roadside as growing numbers of desperate families flee Syria’s bloody civil war, refugees have told Save the Children.

The aid agency spoke to civilians who have recently fled the country who told of a ‘death journey’ on which children were separated from their parents, with at least one 12 year-old boy being left behind to die on his own after his mother was killed and he became too weak to continue the journey due to shrapnel wounds.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Jun 19 2013 (Haiti Grassroots Watch) - Despite the unforgiving sun and its sweltering heat, Joel Monfiston is working, hammering a piece of worn plywood, watering flowers and picking the weeds out from between rocks and pebbles.

Monfiston, a 34-year-old father and husband, is one of about 10,000 people who live in what was publicised as the model settlement for the 1.3 million Haitians displaced by the January 2010 earthquake.

La Province du Katanga a enregistré près de deux fois plus des cas de choléra que toutes les autres provinces réunies au cours des cinq premiers mois de l’année. Selon l’Organisation mondiale de la santé (OMS), au 20 mai, le Katanga avait rapporté 10 879 cas de choléra dont 247 décès, équivalant à environ 64% du nombre total des cas rapportés en RDC et 77% du total des décès.

Myanmar must tackle discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities - Pillay

GENEVA (19 June 2013) – UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay on Wednesday urged the government of Myanmar to devote urgent attention to tackling the continuing discrimination against ethnic and religious minorities in the country, warning that failure to act could undermine the reform process.

“Myanmar today can act as a source of inspiration by showing how governments can be transformed by a renewed commitment to human rights,” the High Commissioner said.

Responding to the dire humanitarian situation following events in Al Qusayr

Hisyah town is located on the Homs-Damascus international highway, 60 km away from Homs Governorate. Since the beginning of crisis in Syria, Hisyah has become home to many people displaced across the country. It plays host to families from Baba amr, Khaldiyeh, Al-Nazihin, Karam Al-Zaytoon, Arjoun, Ashira, and now also Al-Qusayr villages: Saqirjah, Al-Burhaniyah, al-Muh, Abou Jouri.The estimated number of families currently living in this area is 1,700, including more than 500 families recently arrived from Al Qusayr and Gazzhal.

ROME – For over two years, the world has witnessed millions of Syrians fleeing their homes, escaping from violence in search of a safe haven. Many families have been forced to move more than once, bringing only what they can carry. Bandit attacks displace northern Nigeria herders

KANO, 19 June 2013 (IRIN) - Incessant deadly attacks on Fulani settlements and villages in northern Nigeria by armed bandits - made up partly of disgruntled Fulani who themselves have lost cattle - are threatening herds and upping tensions in northern Nigeria.

Gangs of heavily armed bandits prowl the vast Dajin Rugu forest which spans several hundred square kilometres across Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna states and Niger State in central Nigeria, according to Fulani leaders.
