Watkins urges greater disaster readiness in Lebanon

The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator, Mr. Robert Watkins, visited today the Ashrafieh blast site and called for further steps to help the victims of the explosion and improve Lebanon’s disaster preparedness and emergency response capacity.

Empowering cities on Disaster Risk Reduction Training of trainees for the Municipalities

On Tuesday, 4th of September, and under the patronage of the Ministry of Interior and Municipalities, the opening ceremony of the Training of Trainers on the role of local governments in making cities more resilient to disasters was launched at the Grand Serail. This training was organized due to the continuous joint efforts of the United Nations Development Programme, the Prime Minister’s office and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction on the subject of disaster risk reduction.

Local municipal council members, heads of Unions sharpen their mediation techniques

"In the event of any kind of conflict in my village, I will not hesitate to use my newly acquired mediation techniques and test my skills on the ground," explained Nathalie Badran from Asia Municipality in Batroun, North Lebanon.

Badran, the only female participant in a program on advanced mediation skills organized by the UNDP Peace Building Project at the Four Points Sheraton, Verdun joined nine other municipal council members, heads of Unions, mayors, deputy mayors and municipality staff in a three-day residential program.

UNDP help Lebanese women in conflict-worn communities

Beirut - More than 40 women's cooperatives have formed small businesses across Lebanon to revitalize communities that were economically devastated by the 34-day conflict with Israel in 2006.

Focusing on the well-being of women and wider communities in areas of Lebanon where some live on incomes as low as US$2.40 per day, the 42 cooperatives were resourced and trained with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The UNDP Resident Representative, Ms. Marta Ruedas and the Ambassador of the Switzerland in Lebanon, H.E. Ms. Ruth Flint signed on November 26th 2010 an Agreement to support the UNDP project "Support to the Lebanese Palestinian Dialogue Committee" funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) for a total amount of 300 thousand dollars. The ceremony took place today at the Swiss Embassy premises in Ashrafieh in the presence of the LPDC President Me. Maya Majzoub and the President of SDC Mr. Evan Foiranbon.

Lebanon: Combating desertification in the Aarsal area

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) tackles the problem of desertification in the plains and valleys of the Baalbeck and Hermel most affected areas. It is currently working on mitigating the effects of floods and droughts and taking actions to stop land degradation.

UNDP human development initiatives in the Arab World

UNDP directed US$579 million in human development aid to the Arab region in 2008, an increase of 21 percent from the year before in a region that is experiencing a number of conflict and post-conflict recovery situations. A summer camp brings together Lebanese and Palestinian youths

A UNDP-supported conflict recovery project in Lebanon , in collaboration with the Government, is breaking down prevailing stereotypes held by Palestinian and Lebanese youth through a very unique program.

The summer school brings together 22 Lebanese and Palestinian young people in an isolated setting and works with them to build better dialogue skills. It is located deep in the Aley Mountains and far from the conflict zone where they live.

Un projet de relèvement post-conflit mis en œuvre au Liban avec l'appui du PNUD, en collaboration avec le gouvernement, déboulonne les stéréotypes des jeunes, palestiniens et libanais, au moyen d'un programme unique en son genre.

Lebanese Palestinian youth summer school III - North Lebanon

For the second consecutive year, the United Nations Development Program organized, in partnership with the Lebanese Palestinian Dialogue Committee (LPDC) and in cooperation with the Lebanese Center for Policy Studies (LCPS), a summer school that gathered 16 young men and women from Nahr el Bared Camp and the six surrounding municipalities.

Towards free, fair and transparent elections in Lebanon

The 2009 Lebanese elections will be different from the previous parliamentary elections. This year, several changes were made concerning the electoral procedures such as redrawing of the electoral district, holding the elections in all the districts at the same day and using the National ID cards instead of voter cards.
