Measles deaths

LAHORE, May 20: Measles claimed lives of three more babies while 62 more cases surfaced in the provincial capital on Monday.

Two-year-old Javed, two-and-a-half-year-old Imran and eight-month-old Shahzeb succumbed to measles at Children’s Hospital. —

FSNAU Nutrition Update March - April 2013

OVERVIEW

The FSNAU integrated nutrition situation analysis in January 2013 had indicated that the emergency levels of malnutrition (GAM 15-30 percent) seen in Bakool Pastoral, Juba riverine, Southern Gedo and Mataban district since Gu 2012 will be sustained. An improvement in other livelihoods from emergency levels (GAM 15-30 percent) levels to crisis levels (GAM 10-14.9 percent) was expected.

UNHCR working in Niger to contain cholera epidemic in refugee camps

A cholera epidemic declared by the Niger government on May 11 has left 7 people dead in the west of the country, including 2 Malian refugees.

Outbreak of mosquito-borne diseases reported in South

BANGKOK, 20 May 2013 (NNT) - Southern residents are being warned of Chikungunya and dengue fever viruses, which can both be transmitted through a mosquito bite, while more than 200 dengue patients have been reported in Trang province.

According to Director-General of the Department of Medical Sciences Dr. Nipon Phopattanachai, patients found to have contracted the Chikungunya virus are mostly in the southern provinces of Trang, Satun, Chumphon and Surat Thani, and the infection rate is rising sharply.

Kasese: Red Cross in social mobilization against cholera as the needs for displaced persons remain enormous

Two suspected cholera cases have been reported in Kasese District as Uganda Red Cross Society intensifies social mobilisation campaign to control the spread. The 1 May floods washed away most water sources and latrines. The very few exisiting water facilities do not have running water.

The suspected patients are admitted at St. Paul Health Centre IV in isolation tents. According Kasese health officials, the two suspected patients are from Saluti B village, Kanyangeya parish and Acholi quarters, Nyakasanga II parish Nyamwamba Division.

  1. Bangladesh - Tropical Storm Mahasen struck southern districts on 16 May. The Joint Needs Assessment (JNA) is ongoing and preliminary findings are due to be presented tomorrow (21 May). 17 people have reportedly lost their lives, JNA results will provide a better understand of the impact of the cyclone on shelter and livelihoods.

South Sudan Humanitarian Update January-April 2013

Niger/Mali – Cholera (ECHO Daily Flash, 17/05/2013)

A cholera outbreak has been reported in the Tilabery region of Niger, with 198 cases and six deaths reported so far, including cases in the refugee camps and Niamey. The Nigerien Ministry of Health has officially declared an epidemic.

There is a high risk that the disease could spread along the Niger river, and nine suspected cases have been reported in the Gao region of Mali.
