Canada provides emergency assistance for refugees and displaced in eastern Chad

Ottawa, Ontario — Emergency relief items will be provided to approximately 6,000 vulnerable people who have fled the conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan and been displaced in eastern Chad, announced the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation.

"Canada is a compassionate neighbour and is reacting quickly to help alleviate the suffering of those affected by the conflict," said Minister Fantino. "Through Canada's humanitarian assistance, we are ensuring that the most critical needs of those displaced are being met."

Harper Government matches final Rotarian fundraising to make polio history

Ottawa, Ontario — The Harper Government will match the final tally of $2.27 million raised by Canadian Rotarians in support of the global effort to eradicate polio. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will also match the total contributions raised. The Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation, made the announcement today as he and other Members of Parliament met with representatives from Rotary in Canada on Parliament Hill to celebrate the final tally of the Pennies and More for Polio initiative.

Forced Migration Review No. 42: Sexual orientation and gender identity and the protection of forced migrants

Canada provides humanitarian assistance for earthquake victims in China

Ottawa, Ontario — Canada is supporting the International Red Cross Movement in providing immediate lifesaving assistance in support of people affected by the earthquake in China's Sichuan province, announced the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation.

"Canada's humanitarian assistance is helping to address the immediate needs of people suffering from the earthquake in China," said Minister Fantino. "Canadians have strong people-to-people ties with China. This assistance represents our goodwill during these challenging times in Sichuan province."

Canada funds IOM humanitarian projects in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe - The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) has made a C$1 million contribution towards IOM’s humanitarian projects in Zimbabwe.

The funds, which are part of Canada's overall C$3.7 million contribution to IOM’s Humanitarian Compendium for 2013, will support major projects including the provision of emergency shelters, non-food relief items, and emergency health, water and sanitation interventions.

It will address current humanitarian needs of communities affected by internal displacement and provide them with access to basic services.

Canada Provides Further Backing for Action on Black Carbon and Clean Air

The contribution of $10 million is in addition to Canada's previous contribution of $3 million to the CCAC's Trust Fund and $7 million for projects that support the mitigation of short lived climate pollutants in developing countries.

Canadian Leadership in Addressing Syrian Crisis

April 7, 2013 - Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird today announced that Canada is providing real leadership to help address the effects of raging crisis in Syria. Canada is extending credit of up to $2 million to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). The Canadian contribution will make possible the investigation announced recently by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon into alleged chemical weapons use in Syria.
