New Caledonia dengue outbreak kills three

NOUMEA, New Caledonia, April 26, 2013 (AFP) - A dengue fever outbreak in the Pacific islands of New Caledonia has killed three people, officials said Friday, after the World Health Organization raised alarm over the spread of the virus.

A 55-year-old woman from the northern village of Pouembout who was taken to hospital with haemorrhaging became the latest victim of the outbreak, which has killed two other women, aged 55 and 36, since December.

The French island territory has registered some 8,250 dengue cases since September 2012.

Dengue epidemic hits New Caledonia

So far there has been cases reported in the Federated States of Micronesia and the Cook Islands.

But the fever is already at epidemic levels in New Caledonia with 127 cases of type-one recorded last month, and 34 cases so far this month.

Une épidémie de dengue touche actuellement la Nouvelle-Calédonie, où quelque 106 cas de la maladie ont été déclarés depuis mi-février, ont indiqué mardi les autorités sanitaires.

"Il y a des cas un peu partout dans l’archipel, avec une concentration dans le Grand Nouméa, mais aussi des malades en brousse, à Pouembout et à Poindimié", a déclaré à l’AFP, Anne Pfannstiel, médecin à la Direction des affaires sanitaires et sociales (DASS). Plusieurs personnes ont dues êtres hospitalisées.

Calédonie : alerte Orange aux îles Loyauté à cause du cyclone Jasmine

Les îles Loyauté seront placées en alerte orange à partir de 22H00 locales mardi (13H00 à Paris), en raison du cyclone Jasmine, a annoncé le haut commissaire de la République en Nouvelle-Calédonie.

La dépression tropicale forte Jasmine s’est transformée en fin d’après-midi en cyclone, a indiqué Météo France. Il se situait alors à environ 160 kilomètres au nord-est des îles Belep, dans l’extrême nord de la Nouvelle-Calédonie.
