SITUATION OVERVIEW

  1. In Darfur, approximately 3.2 million people currently receive food aid. This includes some 1.7 million IDPs registered in camps.

  2. In the disputed Abyei Area some 67,000 people remain displaced, mostly in Agok and South Sudan. Approximately 10,000 returns have been observed so far.

  3. In South Kordofan and Blue Nile States, an estimated 665,000 people remain internally displaced or severely affected by on-going fighting.

Horn of Africa: Humanitarian Snapshot (as of 20 July 2012)

A year after the food crisis peaked in parts of the Horn of Africa - including the declaration of famine in parts of Somalia - humanitarian agencies have warned that tentative progress towards recovery could be undone in areas experiencing late and erratic rains, ongoing conflict and high food prices. Although dry conditions have eased in parts of the eastern Horn, and famine conditions are no longer present in Somalia, an at least 9.1 million people are still in need of assistance.

726,500 refugees in Kenya and Ethiopia from Somalia 45% GAM and 20% SAM across IDP settlements in Dollow

Refugee Returns to Somalia (April 2012)
The temporary or seasonal cross-border movements of Somali refugees from Dadaab and Dollo Ado refugee camps to Somalia slightly increased from 2,700 in March to 2,800 in April.
Reports indicate that the refugees departing to Somalia from Dadaab and Dollo Ado are family members, mainly men, who decided to temporarily return to resume agricultural activities during the Gu rainy season.

Sudan: Humanitarian Snapshot (30 June 2012)

An escalation in the number of refugees fleeing to South Sudan points to a deterioration in the humanitarian situation in South Kordofan and Blue Nile. In June, more refugees fled Blue Nile and South Kordofan states, bringing the total number of refugees in South Sudan and Ethiopia to 205,000.

Sudan: Humanitarian Snapshot (30 April 2012)

In April, fighting continues to displace people in South Kordofan and Blue Nile, while in Abyei there have not yet been any large-scale returns of those who fled the area in 2011. In Darfur, updated figures indicate that some 140,000 people returned voluntarily to their homes in 2011, exceeding the number of people newly displaced during the same period.

Fighting in the three Protocol Areas following the secession of South Sudan has resulted in large-scale population displacements. In Darfur, while there have been several outbreaks of localized fighting since the beginning of 2011, an increasing number of returns of refugees and IDPs to more stable areas has been witnessed. Meanwhile, a large-scale movement of people of South Sudanese origin from Sudan to South Sudan continues.

Displacement from Abyei, South Kordofan and Blue Nile States (as of 11 October 2011)

Ongoing conflict between Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Sudanese People’s Liberation Movement - North (SPLM-N) has led to new displacements and refugees from both South Kordofan and Blue Nile states. UNHCR now reports 27,500 refugees have crossed in to Ethiopia, necessitating the opening of a new refugee camp.
