Current Situation Zaire: In Rwanda, the level of violence is increasing daily with yesterday's killing of 5 UN personnel near
Cyangugu. It is clear that expatriates are being targeted for attacks and six have been killed in the last three weeks. Since
January, 1997, the human rights monitors have reported some 64 incidents in which 227 Rwandans were killed. In Eastern
Zaire, the security situation has not improved and remains volatile. ICRC does not have safe access to deliver aid to the
estimated 200,000 or more people trapped between the front lines.
