Sudan: UN Mine Action Office monthly situation report, Feb 2009

Executive Summary

1) MRE teams operations in the West Darfur IDP camps are still halted by the Humanitarian Aid Commission (HAC)/National Security.

2) On 25 February, the Director of National Security and Intelligence Service (NISS) for South Darfur informed IOM, UNHCR and UNMAO that they do not have a mandate to work in South Darfur, to cease all activities and to take up these issues with the Government of Sudan in Khartoum. All UNMAO and contract personnel are returning from the field to Nyala waiting further instruction.

South Kordofan gets a picture of its landmine threat

Probably no-one has seen as much of Sudan as these people have. The Survey Action Center (SAC) have travelled by road or by boat to reach the most remote areas of Sudan to complete their mission. At the request of UNMAO and the Government of Sudan, they are conducting a Landmine Impact Survey, which began with Eastern Equatoria in 2006, and recently completed the state of South Kordofan.
