Summary: On October 2011, Tropical Depression 12-E hit Central America. The already saturated soil in Guatemala and the heavy rain caused flooding and landslides impacted the lives of more than 500,000 persons, of which 82,913 were severely affected. The Guatemalan government decreed a State of Public Calamity on 16 October 2011.

Tireless volunteers put training into practice following earthquake

After the magnitude 7.2 earthquake that struck Guatemala, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies immediately activated two delegates from its Disaster Response Unit. Felipe Del Cid, disaster management delegate and Maritta Vuori, emergency health delegate, traveled on Wednesday 7 November at Guatemala City to support the Guatemalan Red Cross.

Situation

An earthquake of 7.2M occurred on 7 November at 16:35 UTC of the coast of Guatemala, near the border with México, at some 56 km (35 miles) SSW of Retalhuleu, Guatemala. By Wednesday evening, the National Institute of Seismology, Vulcanology, Meteorology and Hydrology (INSIVUMEH) had registered 65 aftershocks. Worst hit areas are San Marcos, the coast of Quetzaltenango, Retalhuleu, Sololá, Totonicapán, South Quiche, and South Huehuetenango. State of Public Calamity announced through the Decreto Gubernativo No. 3-2012.

Guatemala: Earthquake DREF operation n° MDRGT004

Summary: On 7 November an earthquake of magnitude 7.2 occurred off the northwestern Guatemalan coast. Although assessments are still ongoing, the government estimates that more than 1,200,000 persons were affected and 5,251 left homeless. Currently 50 deaths have been reported, while 24 people are still missing. The government of Guatemala declared a State of Calamity on 7 November for the departments of Retalhuleu, Quetzaltenango, Sololá, Quiché, Totonicapán, San Marcos, and Huehuetenango.

Un terremoto de 7.4M ocurrió el 7 de noviembre a las 16:35 UTC de la costa de Guatemala, cerca de la frontera con México, 56 km (35 mile) al SSW de Retalhuleu, Guatemala. A las 4.30pm del miércoles, el Instituto Nacional de Sismología, Vulcanología, Meteorología y Hidrología (INSIVUMEH) habia registrado 19 réplicas. Las zonas más afectadas son San Marcos, la costa de Quetzaltenango, Retalhuleu, Sololá, Totonicapán, Quiché Sur, la parte Sur parte de Huehuetenango.

This annual report updates the achievements made to implement the 2011 Country Support Plan for the Guatemalan Red Cross (GRC). The Guatemalan Red Cross’ work during the past year was guided by the Guayaquil Inter-American Plan and the Strategy 2020, which puts forward three strategic aims: 1. Save lives, protect livelihoods, and strengthen recovery from disaster and crises.
2. Enable healthy and safe living.
3. Promote social inclusion and a culture of non-violence and peace.

Summary:

The GRC continues with their response efforts after the severe flooding and landslides that occurred in October due to Tropical Storm 12-E. As more than 500,000 persons were affected across the country, of which 82,913 were severely affected, the Guatemalan government issued a State of Public Calamity on 16 October. In its auxiliary role to the government, the National Society drew up a plan of action to assist 1,500 families with the support of the current Emergency Appeal.
