Busan: The EU's work on aid effectiveness

The High Level Forum (HLF4) on aid effectiveness takes place between 29 November – 1 December in Busan, South Korea. It will be a key opportunity for donors, ministers and representatives from civil society and the private sector from across the world to come together to discuss to what extent previous global commitments on aid effectiveness made in Paris and Accra have been met and what actions are needed to make aid even more effective in the future.

The European Union announces new initiatives to increase transparency and improve coordination in aid delivery

Brussels, 30 November 2011 - Speaking at the Busan High Level Forum on Aid Effectiveness (HLF4), Development Commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, will today present the European Union's new proposals to make its aid more effective: EU Joint Programming, which will involve EU donors working together on aid delivery and then dividing the work needed in the most efficient way, and an EU Transparency Guarantee, which means that EU Member states will publicly disclose all information on aid programmes so that it can be more easily accessed, shared and published.

Commissioner Piebalgs on his first visit to Niger: an additional support for development and security in the Sahel

Brussels, 26 November 2011 – During his first official visit to Niger, European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs, has announced a new aid allocation in the amount of 91.6 million Euros for the support of security and development in the North of the country. This decision supports the European Strategy for Security and Development in the Sahel.

Romania - Sibiu Fire Damage Assessment Map (as of November 08, 2011)

On November 06, 2011 , heath and forest fires were reported in the mountain region near Sibiu in Romania.
The map shows the burnt area extent derived by semiautomatic image analysis of SPOT-S data (2.S m resolution) acquired on November 08, 2011. As derived from the analysis of the satellite data an area of about 41 hectares mainly covered by natural grassland burnt down up to this date. A breakdown of the type of burnt land cover is given in the table. Furthermore a more detailed view of the detected burnt areas is shown in the zoom boxes.

Commissioner Piebalgs visits Togo to encourage further progress on governance and economic development

Brussels, 18 November 2011 - On the 20 November, European Commissioner for Development, Andris Piebalgs, will arrive in Togo for a two-day visit to look at the country's progress and challenges in the wake of renewed development cooperation with the EU, post-2007.

EU development cooperation with Benin

Summary: 21 November 2011, Brussels - Benin receives support from the European Commission in two main areas: transport/infrastructure and governance. Between 2008 and 2013, Benin will benefit from total EU funding of €420 million, from both the European Development Fund (EDF) and the EU budget; mainly in those two sectors.

The programming also supports a budget support programme as well as activities in areas like private sector development and civil society. Benin received EDF funding of €13 million in 2010.

Official visit of Commissioner Piebalgs in Uganda to explore innovative financing for the agriculture sector

Brussels, 07 November 2011 - Tomorrow, European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs will arrive in Uganda for a two-day visit. Together with government and private sector representatives he will explore how to improve access to financing for small and medium enterprises in agriculture and the agribusiness through public-private partnerships. The Commissioner will also inaugurate an EU-funded road that is essential for cross-border trade in the region. He will meet, among others, President Yoweri Museveni and Prime Minister Amama Mbabazi.

EU development cooperation with Uganda

Uganda receives support from the European Commission in two main areas: transport/infrastructure and rural development. Under the 10th European Development Fund (EDF), Uganda will benefit from total EU funding of €439 million between 2008 and 2013; mainly in these sectors. The programming also foresees a general budget support programme (so-called MDG contract) as well as activities in non-focal areas, such as democratic governance and civil society. Uganda received EDF funding of €80.8 million in 2010.

EU announces new support for education for all in developing countries

Brussels, 07 November 2011 – Tomorrow, the EU will pledge new funding for the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), to improve basic education in over 46 developing countries. The EU's new commitment will provide €31.8 million to the GPE Fund between 2011 and 2013.
