ROMA –Por más de dos años el mundo ha visto como millones de sirios han dejado sus casas para huir de la violencia y buscar un refugio seguro. Muchas familias han sido obligadas a desplazarse más de una vez, llevando consigo solo lo que pueden cargar. Las necesidades de los sirios son enormes, demasiado grandes para ser comprendidas: al finalizar el año, el Programa Mundial de Alimentos de las Naciones (PMA) planea proveer asistencia alimentaria a siete millones de personas, de las cuales la mayoría son desplazados internos o que buscan refugio en países vecinos.

Maize and beans are the most important commodities consumed, with maize availability considered synonymous with food security. Beans are very often consumed with maize. The Nairobi market is indicative for urban consumers. Eldoret is a producing area and located in the “grain basket zone.” Kisumu is a large market located in a deficit area with marginal agricultural productivity. Kitui is prone to droughts and is a marginal producing area. Lodwar market is located in Turkana, a highly food insecure pastoral district which is poorly integrated with other markets.

BAMAKO, 19 juin 2013 (AFP) - L'accord conclu entre le gouvernement malien et les rebelles touareg a ouvert la voie à la présidentielle prévue le mois prochain au Mali, mais Bamako, pressé par le temps, dispose de moins de 40 jours pour organiser ce scrutin crucial pour sortir le pays de la crise.

L'accord signé mardi à Ouagadougou après dix jours de négociations avec les Touareg qui occupent Kidal, leur fief du nord-est du pays, a été bien accueilli au Mali et à l'étranger.

Maize, sorghum, rice, and cowpea are the most important staple foods for Somalis. Maize and sorghum are the preferred staple in agriculture areas, while rice is more popular in pastoral and urban areas. Cowpea is an integral component of all households’ diets. Mogadishu is Somalia’s largest market with links to most markets in the country. Baidoa is a significant sorghum producing and consuming area. Qorioley is a large maize production area. Burao, Galkayo, and Dhusamareb are exclusively pastoral where people depend on purchases of domestically produced sorghum and imported rice.

Somalia Livestock Price Bulletin June 2013

The livestock sector is central to the economic and cultural life of the Somali people. The sector provides food and income to over 60 percent of the country’s population. Burao and Galkayo are the largest livestock markets in the Horn of Africa especially for export sheep and goats from the Somali region of Ethiopia and parts of southern Somalia. The majority of the livestock exported through Berbera and Bosasso seaports transit or pass through these markets.

Maize, sorghum, wheat, and groundnuts are the most important food commodities in South Sudan. Sorghum, maize, and groundnuts are the staple foods for the poor in most rural areas. Maize flour and wheat (as bread) are more important for middle-income and rich households in urban areas. Sorghum and maize are generally substitutable for one another but preferences are shifting towards maize over time, especially in the southern half of Southern Sudan. Groundnuts are important for the rural poor in Northern Bahr El Ghazal, Warrap, and Lakes states.

Gobierno declara emergencia nacional por sequía

Mediante Decreto Supremo el Gobierno declaró Emergencia Nacional por la sequía presentada en 12 municipios de los departamentos de Tarija, Chuquisaca, Santa Cruz y Cochabamba, informó el Ministro de Defensa, Rubén Saavedra Soto, al término de la reunión de Gabinete de Ministros.

El Ministro Saavedra precisó que debido al impacto que ha generado el déficit de agua en la zona del Chaco, el Consejo Nacional para la Reducción de Riesgos y Atención de Desastres (CONARADE) recomendó al Jefe de Estado la declaratoria de Emergencia Nacional.

The US$20 million grant from the International Development Association (IDA) approved by the World Bank Board of Directors supports key actions in the areas of public financial management, public procurement, and electricity sector performance.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today announced the appointment of Major General Michael Finn of Ireland as the Head of Mission and Chief of Staff of the United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO).

Major General Finn succeeds Major General Juha Kilpia of Finland, who will complete his assignment on 30 June 2013. The Secretary-General is grateful to Major General Kilpia for his dedication and effective leadership of UNTSO over the past two years.

Towards a safer refuge in Dadaab

The astonishing sight of school children huddled around street lights on school nights has become a familiar sight in the world’s largest refugee camp, Dadaab. This is where most school assignments get done. Oblivious to the evening rush, the youngsters train their eyes on their ruled notebooks.

‘When we installed the street lamps, it was for the purpose of improving general security, because the camp becomes pitch dark at night,’ says Firas Budeiri of the Danish Refugee Council (DRC) in Dadaab.

• On 17 June 2013, AFAD - the Disaster and Emergency Management Agency of Government of Turkey - announced that the total number of Syrians registered and accommodated in 20 camps in 10 provinces has decreased to 199,083 including 371 Syrians receiving medical treatment in hospitals. AFAD reported that during the last 24hrs (17-18 June), 1,272 new arrival Syrians were registered and accommodated in the camps and 2,194 Syrians voluntarily returned to Syria.

IDB makes $15 million policy-based grant for Haiti

Support for reforms to boost agricultural productivity and rural incomes

A $15 million grant from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will support policy, legal and institutional reforms to benefit Haiti’s agricultural sector. Farming plays a fundamental role in the Haitian economy, accounting for around half of the country’s jobs and almost one quarter of national income.
