At any given time, more than 10 million people are imprisoned in penal institutions or held in detention centers around the world. Populations in incarceration and detention have specific and substantial health needs, which can be exacerbated by the physically and psychologically demanding living conditions in these settings. Prison health-care systems are often under-resourced, and healthcare providers can be faced with a myriad of complex clinical, ethical and managerial challenges on a daily basis.

Aims of the HREA Advocacy Institute

The HREA Advocacy Institute is an annual advanced training program for staff members of NGOs and inter-governmental organizations that have a human rights mandate. The training aims to equip participants with the necessary knowledge and understanding of critical concepts and exposure to skilled-based advocacy methods and tools to reflect on and strengthen their own work.

Programme overview

The Accountability in Humanitarian Action course is a one-week intensive training program. This course will explore the concept of accountability within humanitarian intervention. In particular it will look at the contemporary significance of accountability for humanitarian response-when and why it has become an important concept for humanitarian intervention, and specific events that have led to a shift from donors to recipients of aid as the agents of accountability.

The Leadership & Management of Humanitarian Action course is a one-week intensive training program. The Leadership & Management of Humanitarian Action course examines and evaluates effective managerial methods and skills needed to build a strong, flourishing non-governmental organization (NGO). Participants will be provided with both a theoretical and practical framework for understanding the economic and business-related dimensions of a successful humanitarian organization.

The Health Emergencies in Large Populations (HELP) Course offered by Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health is a collaborative program with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The HELP course offers humanitarian workers an intensive course in humanitarian assistance, public health principles and disaster epidemiology.

Overview

This course familiarizes participants with project monitoring and evaluation (M&E) systems and tools that focus on results in international development. The course offers participants both a conceptual framework and practical skill development
