All displaced quake victims resettled

YA'AN, Sichuan, May 7 (Xinhua) -- All 729,341 people who were displaced by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in southwest China's Sichuan Province have been resettled, authorities in the city of Ya'an said on Tuesday.

Ya'an city government said it will subsidize displaced surviors as well as residents without a stable income.

More than 780,000 people will be subsidized with 10 yuan (1.62 U.S.dollars) and half a kilogram of grain per person per day for six months, according to the government plan.

Specialist teams helping survivors in Sichuan following earthquake

Liao Xueli will probably never forget the experience of last month’s 7.0-magnitude earthquake, which struck her village in southwestern China’s Sichuan Province – even though she had what she feels is a lucky escape in the disaster. The quake struck while she was crossing a bridge.

“The earth was shaking and cracking; I definitely would have been killed by a collapsed wall if I had not been on the bridge,” said Ms Liao, 50.

Health demands in quake-hit area being met: authority

BEIJING, May 2 (Xinhua) -- The health needs of victims in the area hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake in southwest China are being met, the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) said on Thursday.

Epidemic prevention work fully covers the quake-hit area in Ya'an, Sichuan Province, and water sanitation monitoring and environmental sterilization have been implemented, according to the commission.

Water supply resumes in quake-hit China city

YA'AN, Sichuan, May 1 (Xinhua) -- Water supply has been resumed in Ya'an City, about 10 days after a 7.0-magnitude quake struck the city in southwest China's Sichuan Province, local authorities said on Wednesday.

The quake, which jolted the city's Lushan County on April 20, cut water supply to 1 million local residents, among whom 848,800 live in rural areas, according to the city's water authority.

As of midnight on Tuesday, all water supplies in urban areas have been resumed, while 99.2 percent of rural residents had access to clean water, the water authority said.

Aftershocks and continuous wet weather posed serious menaces of landslides and mudslides.

Canada provides humanitarian assistance for earthquake victims in China

Ottawa, Ontario — Canada is supporting the International Red Cross Movement in providing immediate lifesaving assistance in support of people affected by the earthquake in China's Sichuan province, announced the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation.

"Canada's humanitarian assistance is helping to address the immediate needs of people suffering from the earthquake in China," said Minister Fantino. "Canadians have strong people-to-people ties with China. This assistance represents our goodwill during these challenging times in Sichuan province."

No major epidemic after Sichuan quake

LUSHAN, Sichuan, April 25 (Xinhua) -- No major epidemic nor emergency health incidents have occurred in Lushan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, after it was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, a local official said on Thursday.

As of Wednesday, a total of 1.41 million sq meters of land had been disinfected, and tropical freshwater snails had been destroyed in an area covering 120,000 sq meters to prevent snail fever, said Zhu Xiaoping, vice director of the center for disease control and prevention of Sichuan Province.

Official stresses make-shift toilets for quake-hit areas

LUSHAN, Sichuan, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Local authorities have initiated an emergency plan to meet people's needs for make-shift toilets in Lushan County, southwest China's Sichuan Province, after it was hit by a 7.0-magnitude earthquake on Saturday, said an official on Thursday.

"It is a priority to clean and transfer rubbish, carry out disinfection in toilets, and reconstruct sub-standard dry latrines," said Wang Huaqing, official with the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

SW China province gears up for post-quake rebuilding

BEIJING, April 25 (Xinhua) -- Southwestern Sichuan Province is making every effort to carry out rescue and relief work in the quake-hit region, and prepare for the post-quake reconstruction, local authorities said at a press conference here Thursday.

Search and rescue work is still under way though the "golden rescue time," or the first 72 hours after the quake, is over, said Zhong Mian, vice governor of the province.

Earlier this week, I accompanied our local partner, the China Foundation for Poverty Alleviation (CFPA) to the epicenter of the earthquake's impact for a joint needs assessment. The purpose was to get first-hand information to decide what emergency relief we should provide.

The 7.0 earthquake struck Ya'an prefecture in Sichuan on Saturday, killing nearly 200 people and injuring more than 14,000. Most damage was sustained in Lushan, Tianquan and Baoxing counties.

A magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit a rural area of Sichuan province in southwest China the morning of Saturday, April 20, affecting several Ya’an counties, including Lushan County, the quake’s epicenter.
The earthquake has affected 1.5 million people. As of April 22, the death toll stood at 188, with 25 missing and 11,460 injured.

Summary: A 7.0-magnitude earthquake that hit China's Sichuan province at 8.02 a.m. Beijing time on 20 April had its epicentre near Lushan County, Ya’an Prefecture at a depth of 13 km. 3,509 aftershocks have been reported with several of them being above magnitude 5.

At 08:02am on 20 April 2013, Beijing time, an earthquake of magnitude 7.0 hit Lushan county of Yaan City, Sichuan Province. Along with its thousands of aftershocks, the earthquake has caused heavy damage in the affected areas. As of 22 April, the death toll stands at 188 with 25 missing and 11,460 injured. Altogether 2,163 aftershocks have been felt in the epicentre area, over 60% of the houses have collapsed and the true extent of the destruction is still to be assessed.
