Tajikistan: Civil unrest DREF operation final report (MDRTJ015)

Summary: CHF 185,162 was allocated on 7 August 2012 from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan (RCST) in delivering immediate assistance to some 9,720 beneficiaries (1,620 families) and rendering psychosocial support for some 7,000 people.

The sixth Programmatic Development Policy Grant (PDPG6) is part of a series of grants provided since 2009, which support the Government of Tajikistan’s efforts to mitigate the impacts of the global economic crisis, promote sustained growth and reduce poverty.

Water safety project: success stories in Tajikistan

Achieving a sustainable and safe water supply has been an ongoing challenge in Tajikistan. To help respond to this problem, WHO launched a special water safety project in 2011, with two pilot sites in Panjakent and Hamadoni districts of Tajikistan. The project is being implemented with financial support from the German Environment Ministry (BMU) as part of the broader WHO/BMU seven-country initiative "Protecting health from climate change".

U.S. Government Increases Access to Safe Drinking Water

Today, U.S. Embassy Charge d’Affaires, a.i. Sarah Penhune, participated in the opening ceremony for a safe drinking water system in Pakhtaobod, Tojikobod Jamoat,Vakhsh Raion. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) funded and implemented the project through its Tajikistan Safe Drinking Water Project (TSDWP). Local government officials, USAID representatives, community citizens, and the TSDWP project team took part in the ceremony which included a performance by local school children on the importance of clean water and good hygiene.

Summary: Early morning on 24th July 2012, Tajik government forces launched a special military operation in Khorugh city, the administrative centre of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, also known under the Russian acronym of “GBAO”, in the east of the country. As a result of the military operation in the city, the population was seriously affected.

WHO provides assistance for reconstruction of water supply system to district hospital in Tajikistan

As part of a wider project to protect health from climate change, the WHO Country Office in Tajikistan is supporting efforts to ensure safe water supplies to hospitals. This work is being carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the State Sanitary Epidemiological Surveillance Service (SSESS), and with financial support from the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU).

USAID Rehabilitates Drinking Water Supply System in Bokhtar District

The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) officially handed over a rehabilitated drinking water system to the Bokhtar Water Service. The Water Service caters to 1,900 residents of the Ismoili Somoni Township in the Bokhtar District. The Bokhtar District Chairman, Mr. Abdualim Ismoilov, and USAID’s Regional Democracy and Governance Director for Central Asia, Mr. David Hoffman, led the ceremony. Representatives of the District, Jamoat administrators, and residents of Ismoili Somoni Township were also in attendance.

29 May 2012 – At a meeting of the Steering Committee of the National Policy Dialogue on Integrated Water Resources Management (NPD IWRM) in Tajikistan, held on 25 May in Dushanbe, it was decided to finalize a Water Sector Reform Strategy for irrigation, drainage and drinking water in Tajikistan in October 2012.

Earthquake in Rasht valley, Direct Rule Districts Tajikistan Situation report No 3

Situation Overview

A 5.7 Richter scale earthquake occurred on the night of May 13th, 2012 in the Rasht valley, central Tajikistan. The earthquake affected the three districts of Nurabad, Rasht and Tavildara (at least 12 villages), killing 2 and affecting an estimated 2,531 people - residents of the 86 destroyed and 276 damaged residential buildings.

Assessments are still underway (due to the isolated and mountainous area of the disaster) by the district-level Commissions on Emergency Situations and the damage information is still subject to change.
