Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction: Stories of Triumph from the Field

Description

The Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) was established in May 2000 and provides direct grant assistance to the poorest and most vulnerable groups in developing member countries (DMCs) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) while fostering long-term socioeconomic development. The grants target poverty reduction initiatives with the direct participation of nongovernment organizations, community groups, and civil society.

UNHCR/WFP Joint Assessment Mission Report: Assistance to the Refugees from Bhutan in Nepal (18 June-08 July 2012)

Following the enforcement of restrictive and discriminatory citizenship laws in Bhutan, over 100,000 refugees from Bhutan fled to Nepal in the early 1990s, where they were recognized on a prima facie basis by the Government of Nepal (GoN). The refugees from Bhutan were originally settled in seven refugee camps in south-eastern Nepal, where the GoN and UNHCR provided them with basic humanitarian assistance and international protection, in cooperation with other national and international partners, including WFP.

Earthquake recovery in schools

On 21 September 2009, Bhutan was hit by an earthquake measuring 6.3 on the Richter Scale. The epicentre of the earthquake was in East Bhutan and affected 10 neighbouring districts. As well as damaging around 4,000 homes the earthquake damaged over 100 schools, affecting about 14,000 schoolchildren. The earthquake caused structural damage to classrooms, and water and sanitation facilities were destroyed.

CERF provides $1.6 million for shelter and temporary schooling for earthquake-affected populations in Bhutan

5 October 2011: The Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has provided US$1,605,535 in life-saving funds for earthquake-affected populations in Bhutan.

More than 8,000 households have been affected by the earthquake, with the total collapse or major damage reported to 845 houses, 110 schools, 36 hospitals and health units and religious structures. An estimated 40,035 people have been directly affected with 4,225 persons displaced from their homes since the 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck on 18 September 2011.

CERF Quarterly Update 3rd Quarter 2011

Horn of Africa Funding Latest

More than 13 million people remain in urgent need of assistance in Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya and Djibouti. Since the beginning of the year, the Emergency Relief Coordinator (ERC) has allocated more than $128 million from the CERF in response to this catastrophe. Nearly 73 per cent of this—$93.4 million—was provided in this third quarter.

DETAILS OF THE EMERGENCY:

Fire in two Bhutanese refugee camps (Goldhap and Sanischare) in eastern Nepal on 22 March 2011 destroyed 750 refugee shelters. The influx of Bhutanese refugees began in Nepal in the 1990s and there are at present 67,256 Bhutanese refugees staying in seven designated camps in eastern Nepal, nearly 500 kilometres east of the capital city
