L'Union européenne alloue une aide d'urgence à la région des Caraïbes après le passage de l'ouragan Sandy

Bruxelles, le 8 Novembre 2012 - Suite à l'évaluation des besoins effectuée par les experts humanitaires de la Commission européenne sur le terrain, la Commission a alloué € 6.000.000, prenant effet immédiatement, afin de fournir une assistance aux victimes de l'ouragan Sandy qui a frappé les Caraïbes la semaine dernière.

"L'ouragan Sandy illustre l'intensité croissante des catastrophes naturelles auxquelles même les pays les mieux préparés comme les Etats-Unis, ne sont pas à l'abri", a déclaré Mme Kristalina Georgieva, commissaire de l'aide humanitaire.

In response to serious damages caused by Hurricane Sandy, the European has released €6 million to bring immediate relief to the most vulnerable population severely affected by the hurricane in the Caribbean.

Caribbean Hurricane Season OCHA Situation Report No. 24

This situation report is based on information received from, the UN Emergency Technical Team (UNETT) in the affected countries, the Regional Office in Panama and the National Hurricane Centre.

HIGHLIGHTS

- The Emergency Relief Coordinator John Holmes visited Haiti on 23 and 24 October. He called for continued efforts from the humanitarian community and appealed for donors to sustain their generosity.

- The situation in Gonaives and other affected areas in Haiti remain difficult in particular with regards to shelter and food security.

Mission accomplished: The United States completes a $1 billion hurricane relief and reconstruction program in Central America and the Caribbean


The ruinous track of Hurricane Georges, September 20-26, and the even more devastating path of Hurricane Mitch, October 23 - November 3, 1998. A category 3 hurricane when it hit the Dominican Republic, Georges caused extensive damage as it moved slowly over some of the most populated and productive regions of the country. When Mitch struck Honduras the following month, it was a category 5 (the most intense on the hurricane scale). Though Mitch lost strength inland, its heavy rains caused catastrophic flooding and mudslides while it was stalled over Central America.

Hurricane Ivan & Tropical Storm Jeanne: What the UK is doing to help, Information note #2

Hurricane Ivan

After passing through the Caribbean, Hurricane Ivan came ashore the US Gulf coast on Thursday, 16 September as a category 4 hurricane. It took one week, from 7 to 14 September, for the hurricane to travel across the Caribbean, causing over 70 deaths and severe damage along its way. Hurricane Ivan caused devastation in Grenada and Grand Cayman, significant damage in Jamaica, and lesser damage in other island nations such as Trinidad and Tobago.
