NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2012

After an intense year of natural disasters in 2011, countries in the Asia-Pacific region welcomed a reduction in the number of events in 2012. OCHA and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters recorded 93 natural disaster events in 2012, in which over 3,200 people were killed and more than 75 million people were affected. China and the Philippines experienced the most disasters in 2012.

Emergency Assistance to the Republic of Palau for Typhoon Disaster

  1. On Thursday, December 13, the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency relief goods worth five million yen (portable jerry cans, blankets, water purifiers, etc.) to the Republic of Palau, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in response to the request from the Government of Palau following serious damage from the typhoon.

Huge relief effort underway in the Philippines

Typhoon Bopha has left more than 130,000 people seeking shelter in evacuation centres, Red Cross is providing emergency relief across the southern Philippines.

Australian Red Cross CEO, Robert Tickner, said the humanitarian consequences of Typhoon Bopha are worse than was originally thought in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

HIGHLIGHTS

Starting on December 2, Typhoon Bopha—known as Pablo in the Philippines— tracked south of the Republic of Palau (RoP) and across the Philippines, bringing winds of up to Category 5 strength and causing widespread damage.

USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) deployed several staff members to the Philippines, RoP, and Guam to track the storm as it moved through the region, coordinate assistance efforts, and conduct assessments in affected areas.

Palau: Typhoon Bopha Situation Report No. 2 (as of 5 December 2012)

Highlights

  • A State of Emergency has been declared.
  • Congress has been asked to appropriate US$10 million for response and recovery efforts.
  • Current priorities are shelter, water, sanitation and power. 92 houses have been completely destroyed and 59 houses have major damages. Initial Damage Assessments are continuing, with results still pending.
  • No casualties or major injuries have been reported.
  • The hospital and clinics will resume normal operations as of today.
  • A Recovery Task Force has been established

Palau pushing for home water tanks to secure supply
