Emergency grant aid for Kenyan Internally Displaced Persons

1. Following the situation where the number of Kenyan internally displaced persons has increased to as many as 250,000 persons as a consequence of presidential election in Kenya, the Government of Japan decided on February 1 (Fri) to provide emergency grant aid of approximately 478 million yen (approximately 4.12 million dollars), through the World Food Programme (WFP) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), for the provision of food and water as humanitarian assistance to the Kenyan displaced people.

HIGHLIGHTS

After two weeks of speeches, debates and workshops, the Kivus Conference on Peace, Security and Development ended on 23 January with the signature of an act of engagement from the different armed groups and representatives of DRC government.

FARDC reacted after security incidents on humanitarians in Rutshuru by setting-up a military survey post in Katoro.

Iraq: IOM emergency needs assessments (post Feb 2006 displacement in Iraq) 01 Feb (1) 2007 bi-weekly report

Following the February 2006 bombing of the Samarra Al-Askari Mosque, escalating sectarian violence in Iraq caused massive displacement, both internal and to locations abroad. In coordination with the Iraqi government's Ministry of Displacement and Migration (MoDM), IOM continues to assess the movement of Iraqis through a network of partners on the ground.

Significantly fewer Iraqis were displaced in 2007 than were displaced in 2006, suggesting that internal displacement in Iraq has slowed. However, displacement continues to occur in some locations

Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) issued a press statement that they will be opening one of the Kariba gates. However, it is not stated when this will be done, but the ZRA has indicated they will provide seven days notice before releasing the gate. This will have an effect on the Kafue river basin and the Luangwa River basin and regionally on the Zimbabwe and Cahora Bassa dam in Mozambique. Cologne. On Ash Wednesday, 6 February, Malteser International starts its Lent Campaign 2008: „40 Euros for Sri Lanka'. Until Easter, the water and sanitation engineer Suzanna Lipscombe will report on a weekly basis from Sri Lanka on her projects, the people she is working with and the situation in the South-Asian country. Since 2005, Malteser International has been supporting the reconstruction and rehabilitation after the tsunami in Sri Lanka. Next to the reconstruction of villages, the work of the organisation mainly focuses on water supply, wastewater treatment and hygiene education.

a) Situation

Re-location of Kenyan refugees to Mulanda Transit Centre continues. As of January 31, 2008, 1, 184 refugees had been transferred to Mulanda by UNHCR. The refugees at Mulanda are from Busia, Manafwa and Malaba points.

Several officials from Government/OPM, UNHCR, URCS, UNOCHA, Tororo district authorities, His Highness Adola and cabinet this week visited and addressed refugees at the transit camp.

The number of refugees in Kapchorwa is 5, 221 while in Bukwo is 1, 301. These are figures provided by the district.

SITUATION UPDATE

The Post Election Violence has increasingly continued to ravage most parts of the country. Tension is high in most parts of the Rift Valley, Central, Nyanza and Western Provinces. Rift valley remains to be the worst hit province in the country and most parts have experienced some of the worst clashes ever experienced in the country. Killings and burning are reported to be taking place in areas of Kitale, Eldoret, Molo, Elburgon, Kuresoi, Koibatek, Nakuru, Naivasha, Limuru, Kericho and Kipkelion.
