Gender and Water Resource Guide

This guide has been developed to assist practitioners in mainstreaming gender within the context of integrated water resources management (IWRM), building on existing initiatives by summarising available tools and materials on gender mainstreaming in IWRM.

To be used in conjunction with the texts and materials to which it refers, the guide gives a brief overview and summary of issues within the different categories of IWRM and is designed to raise awareness and promote learning and analysis on the relevant social equity and gender issues.

Between January and December 2002, the teams of Terre des hommes (Tdh) Mother-Child-Health project in Kabul visited 11'569 houses in search for women in need. 28'382 home visits were made to provide midwifery services to mothers and pregnant women. 84'399 women participated in health education in their homes and 4'046 babies entered the program.

Between October and December 2002, the teams of Terre des hommes' (Tdh) newly established Mother-Child-Health project in Kandahar visited 2'126 houses in search for mothers in need.

Landslides in Garut, West Java

Triggered by torrential rains, a series of landslides occurred in Garut, West Java at 02.00 a.m. on Wednesday (29 Jan.). Three villages (Nenggeng, Budi Anten, and Bojong Jambu) of Mandalasari and Karangmulya sub-district, Kadungora district, were affected. Bojong Jambu village was the worst-affected area. The SATLAK, represented by the Head of Social Welfare District Office, reported 16 deaths. Search and Rescue workers at Garut district level are working to find other victims.

Emergency assistance to Peru for flood disaster

1. On January 31 (Fri), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance in kind equivalent to about 13 million yen comprising tents, plastic sheets, water purifiers, water tanks and plastic water containers, to the Republic of Peru, which has sustained damage from flooding.
2. Since the beginning of January, intermittent rain has hit the southern region of Peru, flooding rivers, destroying houses in mudslides, and damaging cropland and livestock in Madre de Dios and Puno Departments. As of January 29, there were 6 people dead, about 48,000

From 27-29 January, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) undertook a mission to assess the situation of IDPs from Chechnya residing in tent camps in Ingushetia and in temporary accommodation centers (TACs) in Chechnya. In Ingushetia, the team met IDPs who had moved from the former Iman tent camp to "box-tents" in Aki-Yurt village, and visited camps A and B. Despite the difficulties the IDPs are facing in Ingushetia, the majority strongly desired to stay there, citing insecurity

Mozambique situation update 31 Jan 2003

Cholera Outbreak in Central and Northern Mozambique: 1,289 Cases Registered so far
Since September 2002, a number of outbreaks of cholera have been reported in Nampula, Niassa, Cabo Delgado and most recently Sofala Province. As of 28 January 2003, 1,289 cases had been reported with 32 deaths. Sofala and Cabo Delgado are currently the worst affected provinces.

Village members in Georgia rebuild bridges, hope

Residents in Tsira come together to improve their village
Tsira is an Armenian village located in the Akhaltsikhe district in eastern Georgia. It has around 500 people including several Georgian and Greek families living together in peace. Long-time residents take pride in the fact that the village has always had a high level of community participation - trying to solve problems such as fixing the roads and undertaking construction on its own.

The village first heard about Mercy Corps' East Georgia Community Mobilization Initiative from neighboring villages.

The "All Our Children" campaign delivers clean water and health care in parts of Baghdad, Iraq

In Hai Tarek, one of the poorest areas of Baghdad, the CWS-supported "All Our Children" campaign is delivering daily tankers of clean water and supporting a local medical clinic. As Mazen Mohsen, an Iraqi physician, says: "Humanitarian work is still needed here."
The "All Our Children"-funded water project -- including distribution of jerry cans to the residents -- is improving lives in an area where most residents don't have jobs and where eight out of 10 people are children.
