Uganda: Ebola outbreak (MDRUG031), DREF Operation Final Report

CHF 122,546 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Uganda Red Cross Society in delivering immediate assistance directly to 100 households affected by Ebola (585 affected people) and 3,628,390 people indirectly. Unearmarked funds to repay DREF are encouraged.

Democratic Republic of Congo: Humanitarian situation (January 2012 - April 2013)

Since 2012 the DRC has witnessed a constant increase in the number of internally displaced people, up from 1.7 million in December 2011 to more than 2.6 million in April 2013. The east of the country has remained very unstable due to the presence of various armed groups and militias.

Canada helps Ugandans affected by flooding and a cholera outbreak

OTTAWA — Canada is providing life-saving assistance to combat a cholera outbreak which could affect more than 900,000 people in Uganda, as well as support to help meet the immediate needs of approximately 6,500 people affected by the flooding in western Uganda, announced the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation.

Churches send relief to Kasese flood victims

Churches in Uganda under the umbrella of Uganda Joint Christian Council (UJCC) and Act-Alliance have donated items worth US$60,000 (about sh160m) to victims of the recent Kasese floods.

The relief items were mostly household stuff – 1200 saucepan sets, 1000 jerrycans, 1500 boxes of soap, 1000 blankets, 1000 mosquito nets, together with 100 sleeping kits.

In addition to this were 60 cooking stoves, 20 boxes of water purifier, and much more.

New Arrivals: In April 2013, an estimated 4,615 migrants arrived on Yemen’s shores via Djibouti, a 46% decrease from March. 80% of these migrants were Ethiopians while the rest were Somali.

Boats: A total of 66 vessels left via the Red Sea for Yemen carrying an average of 69 passengers per trip in the month of April.

Kasese: Red Cross in social mobilization against cholera as the needs for displaced persons remain enormous

Two suspected cholera cases have been reported in Kasese District as Uganda Red Cross Society intensifies social mobilisation campaign to control the spread. The 1 May floods washed away most water sources and latrines. The very few exisiting water facilities do not have running water.

The suspected patients are admitted at St. Paul Health Centre IV in isolation tents. According Kasese health officials, the two suspected patients are from Saluti B village, Kanyangeya parish and Acholi quarters, Nyakasanga II parish Nyamwamba Division.

ShelterBox responds to flooding in Uganda

A ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) has just landed in Uganda as continuous heavy rains in the western Kasese region have caused the ‘worst flooding since 1976’, according to the country’s authorities and media reports.

Uganda National Rotary alerted ShelterBox Operations department describing the disaster:

‘… Rains have wreaked havoc in Kasese District… at least six people have been killed… thousands of homes washed away, a hospital inundated, and roads made impassable… the immediate needs are shelter, blankets, water filtration…’

The Danish Embassy, Strides for Family Health, Danish Red Cross have contributed towards Uganda Red Cross Society sh1.8bn appeal to assist 18, 000 people affected by floods in Kasese. The actual number of those affected is 25, 445 people, according to URCS assessments.

Floods ravage western Uganda, BWA sends aid

The Baptist World Alliance® (BWA) sent an initial sum of US$5,000 to assist victims flooded out in the East African country of Uganda. At least six people have been killed while others remain missing.

A number of Baptist churches in the affected regions are sheltering persons displaced by the disaster, including one that houses more than 360 persons.

On May 1 and 5 heavy rains fell in Kasese District in western Uganda causing flash floods that led to loss of life and destruction of property. Almost 4,000 houses in 57 villages were affected, displacing more than 25,000.
