Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction: Stories of Triumph from the Field

Description

The Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction (JFPR) was established in May 2000 and provides direct grant assistance to the poorest and most vulnerable groups in developing member countries (DMCs) of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) while fostering long-term socioeconomic development. The grants target poverty reduction initiatives with the direct participation of nongovernment organizations, community groups, and civil society.

Tajikistan: Civil unrest DREF operation final report (MDRTJ015)

Summary: CHF 185,162 was allocated on 7 August 2012 from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan (RCST) in delivering immediate assistance to some 9,720 beneficiaries (1,620 families) and rendering psychosocial support for some 7,000 people.

Frequent small to medium-scale emergencies raged through the region in 2012, inflicting the most damage on rural households. Tajikistan: Strong Earthquake (MDRTJ014) DREF Final report

Summary: CHF 138,467 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) to support the Red Crescent Society of Tajikistan in delivering immediate assistance to some 558 households (3,348 beneficiaries), and to replenish already distributed items.

A 5.7 Richter scale earthquake hit Rasht valley in the east of Tajikistan early morning at 4:30 AM on 13 May 2012. According to the Committee of Emergency Situations and Civil Defence of Tajikistan (CoES), the earthquake killed two, and affected 1,591 residents of 30 villages in Nurobod, Rasht and Tavildara districts.

The food security situation has much improved thanks to good harvests this year, but pockets of food insecurity are predicted among poor households who lost livestock last year in northern Badakhshan and the Wakhan Corridor. GHNI is now expanding its mushroom project, working with widows to yield income by providing more mushroom spores as a small business opportunity.

Natural disasters, including drought, earthquakes, floods, and wildfires, as well as ongoing complex emergencies and limited government capacity in the region, present significant challenges to vulnerable populations in Europe, the Middle East, and Central Asia (EMCA). Between Fiscal Year (FY) 2003 and FY 2012, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/FFP) provided assistance in response to a range of disasters, including floods, wildfires, winter emergencies, and complex crises.

Summary: Early morning on 24th July 2012, Tajik government forces launched a special military operation in Khorugh city, the administrative centre of Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Province, also known under the Russian acronym of “GBAO”, in the east of the country. As a result of the military operation in the city, the population was seriously affected.
