Yemen: Floods OCHA Situation Report No. 3

This report is based on information provided by the Yemenis Civil Defense Authority, the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator in Yemen, and the OCHA/UNDAC team in Yemen, as well as various news reports.

Highlights

- The Government of Yemen reported: 3,264 houses destroyed or badly damaged.

- The Government has not requested external international assistance, but is welcoming international and regional assistance.

Pakistan: Baluchistan Earthquake Information Bulletin No. 02

This bulletin is being issued for information only.

Several aftershocks have been felt in Baluchistan since the two earthquakes that jolted several districts of Baluchistan on 29 October 2008. Official figures from the government and initial assessments indicate that more than 160 people have lost their lives, while 500 have been injured. Iraq: IOM emergency needs assessments (post Feb 2006 displacement in Iraq) 01 Nov 2008 monthly report

Following the February 2006 bombing of the Samarra Al-Askari Mosque, escalating sectarian violence in Iraq caused massive displacement, both internal and to locations abroad. In coordination with the Iraqi government's Ministry of Displacement and Migration (MoDM), IOM continues to assess Iraqi displacement through a network of partners and monitors on the ground.

- At least 44,700 people were affected by recent flooding in Maban (see Section II)

- 4,500 of them have received 73MT of one month food rations

- 713MT more food aid earmarked for Maban is yet to be delivered

I. FOCUS ON SECURITY AND HUMANITARIAN ACCESS (from UNMIS)

- According to UNMIS, on 27 October UNMAO received reports of anti-personnel mines- along the road in the Rajaf West area of Central Equatoria State. It was recommended that the area be raised to Security Level 4 (NO-GO Area) of Security Phase 3 until mine clearance has been completed.

In late July and early August, heavy monsoon rains caused flooding in many areas of Pakistan, particularly affecting Peshawar District in North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Rajanpur District in Punjab Province. Flooding has affected over 500,000 people in these two provinces.

UK announces additional £5 million support for DRC humanitarian crisis

International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander today announced that the UK would provide an additional =A35 million in aid to help meet the needs of people affected by the humanitarian crisis in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Douglas Alexander said:

CWS emergency situation report no. 3: Pakistan earthquake

SITUATION: The death toll from the Wednesday (Oct. 29) 6.4-magnitude earthquake in southwest Pakistan along the Afghan border remains unclear, with officials saying it could climb beyond 300, though officially the toll has been said to be 160 persons; unofficial estimates have put the toll at about 350 persons. Some 3,000 homes were destroyed and about 15,000 left homeless, the Associated Press reported.

ShelterBox responds to Pakistan earthquake

International disaster relief charity ShelterBox is responding to a request for assistance after an earthquake hit Pakistan on Wednesday.

A ShelterBox Response Team departed for Pakistan yesterday to distribute an initial 200 ShelterBoxes. More boxes are likely to follow.

The 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck the Ziarat valley in the southwestern province of Baluchistan just before dawn, causing landslides and reportedly killing more than 200 people. It is thought that around 1,500 homes were destroyed and 15,000 people have been displaced.
