Introduction

The unrest in the Syrian Arab Republic has been mounting since March 2011 leading to displacement of large numbers of civilians. As of early June 2012, external displacement has increased dramatically to neighboring countries including Egypt.

Total number of Syrian refugees registered and awaiting registrations with UNHCR in Egypt stands at 66,420 individuals as of 13th of May 2013.

On Wednesday the 8th of May 2013, a fund raising event for the aid of Syrian refugees, took place at the Cairo Opera House. The event was organized by the British Embassy and UNHCR and was under the patronage of the Secretary General of the Arab League Dr. Nabil Al-Arabi.

CAIRO, April 29, 2013 (AFP) - Bassel Khalil fled the devastating conflict in Syria with only $400 in his pocket and, together with his family, found refuge in Cairo's "Little Damascus" where he scrapes a living giving guitar lessons.

Khalil lives with his lawyer friend Ammar, another Syrian, in an apartment in 6th of October city on the outskirts of Cairo.

They are among hundreds of thousands forced out of their country by war.

The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the Commission Catherine Ashton issued the following statement today:

"I have followed very closely the holding of the referendum on the draft Constitution on 15 and 22 December in Egypt. I welcome the peaceful and orderly environment that prevailed during the vote.

I take note of the majority voting in favour of the Constitution. I also note that voter turn out was at 33%.

Saudi aid to Arab Spring countries $3.7 bn: IMF

WASHINGTON, Sept 19, 2012 (AFP) - Oil-rich Saudi Arabia has distributed $3.7 billion in aid to countries touched by the Arab Spring, most of it to Egypt and Jordan, a report by the International Monetary Fund showed Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia, the Arab world's wealthiest country, has pledged nearly $17.9 billion in support for fellow Arabs since the pro-democracy revolt erupted in Tunisia in January 2010 and spread throughout the region, toppling and shaking authoritarian governments.

Briefing: Egypt’s presidential candidates vow to tackle poverty

CAIRO, 15 June 2012 (IRIN) - Egypt’s presidential run-off, in which around 50 million people are expected to vote on 16-17 June, is spotlighting challenges such as poverty alleviation, the role of NGOs, and environmental issues.

The vote comes in the wake of a popular uprising which ousted Hosni Mubarak’s regime 14 months ago and about 20 days after the first round of elections. Two presidential candidates are standing - the Islamist Mohamed Mursi, and Mubarak’s last prime minister Ahmed Shafiq.

Helping refugee women to fend for themselves

CAIRO, 12 March 2012 (IRIN) - Fatma Soleman’s small table at a special International Women’s Day bazaar in a suburb of the Egyptian capital, Cairo, was a bustle of activity as visitors admired handmade jewelry, colourful bags and gold-embroidered wallets on display.

For the past 12 years Soleman has been teaching hundreds of refugee women in Cairo how to create handicrafts and successfully sell them. “I teach women that they can do it,” she said. “I’m working to help refugees become self-reliant.”
