Building resilience across communities in Senegal

As in other countries across the Sahel, the lack of rainfall during 2011 left parts of Senegal facing food insecurity. This was particularly detrimental for livestock in the lean period just before the rains. In this West African country, it is estimated that some 850,000 people were directly affected by the lack of food, and 2.5 million people were affected indirectly.

Picking up the pieces after Cyclone Mahasen in Bangladesh

On 16 May, 2013, Cyclone Mahasen struck coastal Bangladesh, killing 17 people and affecting around 1.5 million people across the districts of Patuakhali, Barguna and Bhola.

Mofiza Begum was at home with her two sons when the cyclone struck in the early hours of the morning. Suddenly one side of her house fell apart and the entire building became unsteady. Fearing the tin roof and walls might collapse in on her family, she ran to a neighbor’s house, which was still standing.

Pakistan: Monsoon Flash Floods (MDRPK006) - Revised Emergency Appeal

With this Revised Emergency Appeal, the budget has been revised down from CHF 92.6 million to CHF 88.2 million, assisting 900,000 people (130,000 families) beneficiaries for 36 months, and will be completed by 31 July 2013. This revision is based on the actual expected outcomes at the end of the appeal period and in addition includes a relocation of CHF 1,650,377 in support of the Pakistan Red Crescent Society (PRCS) for its relief activities to assist communities affected by the floods in 2012. An unspent balance of CHF 4.4 million remains as a result of the revised budget and plans.

Malawi: Floods DREF operation n° MDRMW009 Update

Period covered by this update: 7 February to 3 May 2013.

Summary: CHF 326,090 was allocated from the IFRC’s Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) on 7 February 2013 to support the National Society in delivering assistance to some 16,370 beneficiaries (3,274 households) affected by floods.

With this operations update, a second allocation of CHF 4,603 from the DREF will be made to support a review of the intervention, making the total allocation from the DREF to the operation CHF 330,694.

Appeal coverage: Up to 31st January 2013 the level of the appeal coverage has reached 84 per cent through cash and in-kind contributions.

A final financial report is now available and is to the Final report for Turkey: Van Earthquake operation (MDRTR002). There is a final balance of CHF 64,581 which would be allocated to the DM project. Please note that the final balance is pending the clearing of audit fees.

The region includes China, Mongolia, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, the Republic of Korea, and Japan. The IFRC supports all five national Red Cross Societies in the region and additionally has long-term planning frameworks specifically for the NSs in China, Mongolia, and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK).
