Saudi aid to Arab Spring countries $3.7 bn: IMF

WASHINGTON, Sept 19, 2012 (AFP) - Oil-rich Saudi Arabia has distributed $3.7 billion in aid to countries touched by the Arab Spring, most of it to Egypt and Jordan, a report by the International Monetary Fund showed Wednesday.

Saudi Arabia, the Arab world's wealthiest country, has pledged nearly $17.9 billion in support for fellow Arabs since the pro-democracy revolt erupted in Tunisia in January 2010 and spread throughout the region, toppling and shaking authoritarian governments.

Secretary-General discusses recent unrest with senior official

Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon met today with a top Bahraini official to discuss his Government’s efforts to restore stability to the small Gulf country after months of popular unrest that has included deadly clashes between security forces and protesters.

Mr. Ban and Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Khalifa met at United Nations Headquarters in New York on the sidelines of the General Assembly’s annual general debate.

Bahrain contributes to UNRWA education in Gaza

UNRWA and the Bahrain Royal Charity Organization (RCO) have signed an agreement for the construction of eight new classrooms at the Fakhari Elementary School in Gaza. The classrooms will be funded by the Bahrain Parliament working through the RCO. UNRWA and the RCO also relaunched a project to construct a complete new school in Gaza, following a pledge originally made in the aftermath of Israel’s attack on Gaza in 2008-2009.
