UNITED NATIONS, April 30, 2013 (AFP) - Jordan on Tuesday warned the UN Security Council that the growing exodus of Syrian refugees was a threat to its stability and the council is now considering a visit to the camps.

Jordan faces a "crushing weight" if the refugee numbers, already over 500,000, keep growing at the current rate, said the ambassador, Prince Zeid al-Hussein, after a private meeting with Security Council envoys.

The 13-year-old arrived two months ago with her mother, six siblings, aunt and five cousins. They finally decided to leave Syria after bombings in their home city of Dara’a hit as close as their neighbor’s house.

Syrian refugees in Jordan: Waiting for the Syria conflict to end

This is a guest blog by Julia Brothwell, a member of our disaster management team who recently returned from Jordan.

As news broke that one million Syrians were seeking refuge in countries neighbouring Syria, I was on my way to Za’atari Camp in Jordan – temporary home to 140,000 refugees. I saw new toilet and washroom facilities being built on the outskirts of the camp. Soon tents and shelters made from containers will spring up to fill the gaps between the breeze-block structures.

Syrian refugee number to triple in Jordan by year-end: UN

04/05/2013 13:53 GMT

GENEVA, April 05, 2013 (AFP) - The number of Syrian refugees in Jordan is expected to triple to 1.2 million by the end of the year, the UN said Friday, lamenting a dire lack of funding for aid operations in the country.

The UN estimates that around 385,500 Syrians have already sought refuge in Jordan, including nearly a quarter of a million children.

"We expect these numbers to more than double by July and triple by December," Marixie Mercado, spokeswoman for the UN children's agency, told reporters.
