UNAMID head visits Darfur’s states to assess security and civilian needs

El Fasher, 1 May 2013 – During the period of 22 to 30 April 2013, the head of the African Union - United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), Joint Special Representative (JSR) Mohamed Ibn Chambas, conducted a series of field visits across the five Darfur states to focus on the security, humanitarian and political situation. Mr. Chambas met with representatives of internally displaced persons (IDPs), traditional leaders, State authorities and UNAMID staff.

Tripartite Meeting on UNAMID focuses on Darfur security, access

Addis Ababa, 16 April 2013 – Concerns over an increase in the number of security incidents in Darfur and access by peacekeepers of the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) to those areas most affected by conflict were the primary focus of discussion of the 15th meeting of the Tripartite Coordination Mechanism on UNAMID. The forum was held yesterday at the African – Union’s (AU) headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

IDPs, refugees discuss return and resettlement at South Darfur conference

More than 400 internally displaced persons (IDPs) from across Darfur, as well as refugees living in neighboring countries, came together for a two-day conference in Nyala, South Darfur, to discuss several pressing issues, including return and resettlement.

The forum, which concluded on 26 March, was organized within the framework of the Doha Document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD), which stipulates that all stakeholders in the Darfur peace process be able to share their views and contribute to that process.

UNAMID investigates circumstances surrounding Arga checkpoint incident

UNAMID deployed on Tuesday 26 March an inquiry team to its team site in Kass locality, South Darfur, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the recent arrest of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) by an unidentified armed group at Arga checkpoint, in a border area between Central Darfur State and South Darfur State.

UNAMID investigation aims to ascertain all the facts surrounding this incident, including the identity of the perpetrators and their motives. The investigation comes after repeated efforts to access the incident area on 24 and 25 March.

UNAMID condemns arrest of Internally Displaced Persons by unidentified armed group in Central Darfur

Khartoum, 25 March 2013 – On 24 March, at around 18:20 hours, a convoy of three commercial buses carrying 31 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and escorted by UNAMID peacekeepers was stopped by a large unidentified armed group in military uniforms and seven jeep mounted guns between the Arga crossing point and Kass locality, a border area between Central Darfur State and South Darfur State. Despite UNAMID opposition, the armed group forced the IDPs to an unknown location.

AU Peace and Security Council assesses Darfur situation

El Fasher, 21 March 2013—Humanitarian aid, civilian protection and criminal elements were among the central issues raised in a 17-19 March visit to Sudan by the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC).

The mission of the 24 members of the AUPSC, led by Ambassador Bulus Paul Zom Lolo of Nigeria, was to gain a first-hand assessment of the situation in Darfur. This assessment was carried out largely through direct engagement with stakeholders at all levels, including the Government, Sudanese civilians and the international community working in Darfur.

UNAMID airlifts North Darfur wounded, strengthens presence in area

El Fasher, 25 February 2013 - On 24 February 2013 in North Darfur, the African Union - United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) airlifted 37 wounded civilians, including one woman and two children, from the El Sereif locality to El Fasher for medical treatment. In addition, the Mission transported 2,700 kilograms of medical and other supplies to the victims of El Sereif as part of its ongoing efforts to address the needs of civilians affected in the North Darfur tribal clashes.

UNAMID Supports to the Promotion of Juvenile Restorative Justice in Zalingei

The African Union-United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) concluded on 30 January 2013 a two-day workshop on restorative justice for juvenile offenders in Zalingei, Central Darfur. The workshop, which was attended by more than 32 participants, including teachers, police officers, civil servants and members of the civil society, was part of the efforts of the UNAMID's Human Rights Section to strengthen the capacity of the juvenile justice system players in applying restorative justice standards more effectively when dealing with children and young people in conflict with the law.

Former child soldiers registered for reintegration

More than 70 former child soldiers, which included 24 girls, were recently registered in South Darfur for rehabilitation and reintegration. The former members of the Sudan Liberation Army / Historical Leadership (SLA/HL) were released in to the communities in 2011. A number of young adults identified as former child soldiers were also identified and registered to benefit from the reintegration program in compliance with a commitment made to the United Nations by the Movement.

Arms registration begins in West Darfur

The first registration and marking of civilian arms in West Darfur officially began on 30 January 2013. Over the course of the next six months, the Government of Sudan expects to register approximately 30,000 arms. The initiative is designed to curb the proliferation of arms and reduce violence in the area.

Mass displacement following North Darfur tribal clashes

El Fasher, 17 January 2013—The African Union - United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) is committed to engaging with all stakeholders to address the current humanitarian needs of thousands of civilians who were displaced in the North Darfur villages of Saraf Omra, Kabkabya and El Sereif.

The commitment comes following a two-day assessment mission to assess the security and humanitarian situation and to verify reports of fighting, which UNAMID received on 6 January, between the Abbala and Beni Hussein tribes in the Jabel Amir area of North Darfur.

UNAMID to send assessment mission, calls for end to deadly tribal fighting in Jebel Amer

El Fasher, 11 January 2013-- UNAMID is alarmed by deadly fighting between Beni Hussein and Abbala tribes in Jebel Amer area near Kabkabiya, North Darfur. While providing full assistance and preparing to send a team to assess the situation on the ground, the Mission also urges the Sudanese Government, North Darfur authorities and leaders from both tribes to end fighting and give dialogue a chance.

UNAMID Acting Chief discusses with Wali Tibin recent developments in Central Darfur

El Fasher, 9 January 2013 – Acting Joint Special Representative of the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) Aichatou Mindaoudou visited Zalingei, the capital of Central Darfur State, on 8 January. During this visit, she held talks with the Wali (Governor) of Central Darfur, Dr. Yousif Tibin, and expressed serious concerns over the ongoing fighting in west Jebel Marra.

UN agencies, UNAMID hold dialogue on protection mechanisms for women

The African Union - United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), in collaboration with UN agencies in the region, organized on 19 December a community dialogue on physical protection in Zam-Zam camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs), North Darfur. The event geared towards raising women’s awareness on issues related to gender-based violence, which would protect them against abuses in their communities.

UNAMID’s projects promotes violence reduction North Darfur

The African Union United Nation Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) on 17 December handed over a health center, to the State Ministry of Health, in Matbaa locality, located approximately 35 kilometers east of El Fasher, North Darfur. The center was built by the local youth who participated in one of the Mission’s Community Labour Intensive Projects (CLIPs).

The facility, which is composed of two examination rooms, pharmacy and toilets, will be the first to provide health services in the area and will benefit six villages around the Matbaa.

UN Country Team, UNAMID expand partnership of peace process and development in Darfur

El Fasher, 13 December 2012 - The United Nations Country Team (UNCT) and the African Union – United Nations Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) have pledged to combine their efforts to work together in implementing specific initiatives including: voluntary returns, human rights and justice, institutional capacity development, and peace building and reconciliation.

This important milestone was reached in the second session of the UNAMID/UNCT Joint Secretariat which concluded on 12 December at UNAMID’s headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur.
