Switzerland provides an additional CHF 10 million in humanitarian aid for crisis in Syria

Bern, 30.01.2013 - As the crisis in Syria continues to worsen, the humanitarian situation has reached disastrous proportions with some four million people in need of aid according to estimates of the United Nations. They also face a harsh winter, as do about 700,000 refugees in the neighbouring states. Switzerland, attending the international donor conference in Kuwait, has pledged CHF 10 million of aid in 2013 to assist those affected by the Syrian crisis.

NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2012

After an intense year of natural disasters in 2011, countries in the Asia-Pacific region welcomed a reduction in the number of events in 2012. OCHA and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters recorded 93 natural disaster events in 2012, in which over 3,200 people were killed and more than 75 million people were affected. China and the Philippines experienced the most disasters in 2012.

IOM Airlifts Stranded Ethiopian Migrants from Yemen, Receives New Funding from Switzerland

An IOM-charter flight carrying 210 stranded Ethiopian migrants from Yemen to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa left Al-Hodeida airport yesterday (11/12/12.)

The flight, which was funded by a USD 2.1 million donation from the Netherlands, brings to more than 9,500 the number of destitute Ethiopian migrants helped by IOM to leave Yemen since 2010.

IOM’s emergency voluntary return programme for stranded migrants in Yemen has now received new backing from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC.)

Switzerland Backs IOM's Humanitarian Evacuation of Migrant Workers from Syria

The Swiss Federal Office for Migration (FOM) has contributed US$ 300,000 towards IOM's evacuation operations of most vulnerable migrant workers caught up in the Syrian crisis.

IOM will use the contribution to evacuate up to 250 extremely vulnerable Third Country Nationals (TCNs). These include minors, the elderly, pregnant women, people in detention due to their irregular status, those with medical conditions and nationals of countries with no diplomatic representation in Syria.

Norway and Switzerland mobilise support for the environmentally displaced

Every year, floods, droughts and earthquakes force millions of people to flee their countries. Environmentally displaced people are particularly vulnerable when they cross international borders, since they do not have the legal protection accorded to political refugees. Norway and Switzerland want the international community to find new ways of helping these people.

“Environmental displacement is a growing humanitarian problem due to climate change,” Minister of Foreign Affairs Espen Barth Eide said.

La Suisse soutient l’évacuation humanitaire des travailleurs migrants par l’OIM depuis la Syrie

Suisse - L’Office fédéral suisse des migrations (ODM) a fait don de 300 000 dollars pour financer les opérations d’évacuation des travailleurs migrants les plus vulnérables pris dans la crise syrienne. L’OIM utilisera les fonds pour évacuer jusqu’à 250 ressortissants de pays tiers extrêmement vulnérables. Il s’agit notamment de mineurs, de personnes âgées, de femmes enceintes, de personnes détenues en raison de leur statut irrégulier, de cas médicaux et de ressortissants de pays qui n’ont aucune représentation diplomatique en Syrie.

SDC assistance

Due to the deteriorating security, SDC’s office in Damascus has temporarily been closed and programs are coordinated from SDC’s office in Amman.

SDC focuses its efforts on the protection and assistance of the affected population in Syria and those fleeing their home to the neighboring countries.

For the population in Syria:

  • ICRC: CHF 1.75 Mio allocated for the 2011 and 2012 Syria Appeals

  • WFP: CHF 1 Mio for emergency food assistance

Switzerland Backs Reintegration of Internally Displaced in Zimbabwe

IOM Zimbabwe has received CHF 800, 000 from the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooporation (SDC) to implement a 17-month project to support community integration of internally displaced people (IDPs) in Zimbabwe.

The project seeks to facilitate the transition of IDPs towards durable solutions and to strengthen protection for both IDPs and marginalised groups in districts affected by internal displacement and irregular migration. IDPs in Zimbabwe are vulnerable and have very limited access to basic and social services.

The Swiss Cooperation Office in Afghanistan celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2012. Subject to fundamental changes, Afghanistan is one of the so-called “fragile” states. Given this complex and volatile context, the SDC is stepping up its commitment in an effort to prevent the achievements so far from being undone. UNHCR Syria Fact Sheet - June 2012 (EN/AR)

  • An overwhelming majority of Iraqi refugees 91.6% of refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Syria are from Iraq. The Government of Syria, which has continuously implemented a generous policy towards the stay of Iraqi refugees, estimates that the country hosts about one million Iraqis. 64.6% come from the region of Baghdad alone and 62.4% sought refuge in Syria five or more years ago. 35% of the 27,681 families registered are female-headed households.

The Swiss Confederation’s Humanitarian Aid is active since 1994 in the Myanmar context (the country itself including the refugee camps in Thailand), which became since 2001 a priority for SDC/HA with the presence of a Regional Humanitarian Coordinator responsible for SDC/HA activities in Thailand and Myanmar.

In the Medium Term Programme 2010 -12 SDC/HA goals are to restore and improve the living conditions and reduce vulnerability of people at risk. SDC/HA supports projects with the following objectives:
