Leaders of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) took a momentous decision in Maputo over the weekend—to shut the doors of the SADC Tribunal, preventing the region’s citizens from seeking justice for human rights abuses.

The shocking decision, which was taken at the annual summit of SADC Heads of State and Government in Maputo, not only left the tribunal in limbo but also rendered it completely toothless by denying individual access to the court.

Africa: Conflicts Without Borders - Sub-national and Transnational Conflict-Affected Areas (January 2007 - August 2008)

Instead of the usual depiction of conflicts as countrywide and defined by national boundaries, this map displays distinct conflict-affected areas in Africa as sub-national and transnational pockets of insecurity, violence, and armed aggression.  Areas of conflict were drawn around locations of reported conflict incidents in 2007 and 2008, as well as concentrations of internally displaced persons and cross-border rebel bases and refugee camps in neighboring countries.  This depiction of areas of conflict more accurately displays where conflict has been occurring

Consolidated Appeals Process (CAP): Humanitarian Appeal 2006

THE SECRETARY-GENERAL FOREWORD TO THE HUMANITARIAN APPEAL 2006
The past year has been a wretched one for millions of disaster victims. It dawned with the Indian Ocean tsunami, saw a hurricane season unrivalled in living memory strike the Americas, and included South Asia’s devastating earthquake. Through it all, other tragic crises persisted in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Like never before, the year stretched and tested the capabilities of aid agencies, and the will of survivors.

South/Southeast Asia and East Africa: Earthquake and Tsunamis - Fact Sheet no. 12

Report
IFRC
Overall Perspective

While the relief phase of the tsunami response was undertaken with vigour and efficiency, some may feel that recovery and reconstruction has commenced more slowly than expected.
